I have a Shilen 12" twist and it will not stabilize the 40gr Vmax unless they are loaded on the hot side. If you are shooting lighter bullets 12" is fine, but if ranges for you are short where you are and are using it for coyotes think about a 9 or 10" twist. For what I do I am happy with 12"

If you have any thoughts about shooting the heavier bullets i.e. 50 Gr. go with a 1 in 9 twist. You can still shoot the lighter bullets but it doesn't work the other way.
Jay nailed the answer. The Rem 223 1:9 twists have shown how the faster twist offers versatility w/o negatively effecting accuracy. This topic was recently discussed thoroughly on saubier.com/forum.

What was said about the 223 is true with the 1-9. I want to get a 204 barrel for my Encore, but I will hold off until I find someone selling the barrel with a 1-10 or faster.

I have a 20-222IMP I planned on shooting 40s. 12 seemed marginal. I did not want the fast 1/9 twist barrel, because I was afriad it would twist lighter bulets apart. I have three Pac-Nor barrels 2 17 and a 20 now. They are fantastic. I went with a 11 twist Pac-Nor and it shoots 30s-40 excellent. I did not see a need to shoot 50s from this gun, but I will be shooting some custom 45s. Pac-Nor seems to have it by the ass for sub calibers. The three groove barrels I own refuse to cooper foul and clean real easy. They clean as good if not better than my Liljas and Harts. Their customer service is about as good as it gets, and the barrel comes with in a day or two of when they promise. Just my experience, not bashing Shilens. I would check them out in a 1/11 or 1/10.

A friend has the 1 in 9 shoot 32 Gr bullets great. I'm really interested in the low to mid 40 Grain bullets myself. But I doubt the a 1 in 10 would stabilize them.

Gophershooter: I hate to be the one to tell you this but the hornet and .308 pre-64s were built on long actions. Unless I am mistaken Winchester did not build short actions until the 1980's or so.
