boom sticko.k., 416x62...some did not like the 66
o.k.
being some did not like the 66 brass and the 66 and 62 have the same casehead...
read the thread below and tell me what you think of this...
https://forums.accuratereloading.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/6521043/m/299100045should have no problems fitting in an 06 action no matter the mag dimensions...
you could also do a 2.1 ish version for 308 size actions...
35 degree shoulder, one cal neck length, blow out body taper and viola!...also same applies to the 411 with a smidge better shoulder.
i will call them the 416 and 411x62 b.s. improved.
i like the longer 66 version better though

ramrod340Been there done that and got the T-shirt. Except mine was a 280 blown out improved case. I did the 416. If I would do it over again I'd go 411 because of the bullets available. But to me what you are discribing is the 411Hawke. Their design was based on the 62 case but the switched to the 06 becasue it was easier to get.

Bent FossdalBoom, just to show it works!
Here is a lineup of the different calibers from .264, 284, 308, .358, original and .416, with a .30-06 dropped in for comparison!
But that ain't much of a shoulder on that .416.... I would stop at .411.

boom stickthats my point...the 62 and 66 brass has seven and a half thousandths MORE shoulder and has an identical (+.0025) shoulder as the 411 hawk...the 416x62 ans 66 will have a smidge BETTER shoulder than the 411!

boom stickthe issue is the 06 brass is .470" and the 62 and 66 brass is .4775"
with that extra .0075 you can go up to 416 and have a oh so slightly better shoulder than the 411 on the 06 brass...
if you have to have the 416, the 62 and 66 brass is the way to go.
does this make sense...

OK

Now I understand. What would you leave the shoulder at? Like I said I used 280 brass and blew the shoulder out to .458 and then made a 416. I never had a headspace issue. But every little bit helps. What I found was with that capacity the heavy bullets use too much case. That's why I would go 411 if I did another one. The 300-325gr makes a better choice than the normal 350-400 or so in the 416.

boom stickyeah, yer seriously eating powder room with the 416 but the 300 gr barnes x and the 325 gr north fork bullets would be good for this set up. thats why the 9,3x66 brass is the better idea
http://www.z-hat.com/images/9.3x66%20drawing.pdf with its 2.61" length you will do better for powder room. as far as shoulder thing, thats up to you. the beauty of this was to get up to 416 or have a better shoulder on the 411 while using the 06 bolt face and not sacraficing the extra round. otherwise if you can lose a round and you dont care about bolt face the a.r. line of carts make good sense.

That is an AWESOME picture. Im considering building a 9.3x62mm on a heavy barrel for a fun gun, but after seeing this picture, that 7mm has me interested. Does it go by a special name? thanks.

With either a 416 or 411 the 66 case will gain you no real capacity in a normal 3.4" magazine. The case will just go further up the bullet.
This is a rough drawing (done before morning coffee)of a 62 & 66 case blown out to .458 at the shoulder a 35deg neck and with a 350gr 416 bullet seated to fit in a 3.4" magazine. The only gross capacity you pick up is between the case wall and bullet. If you look at the case above you can see how small that space is. In playing with my own case and shoulder position I found that you really didn't pick up any net capacity by moving the shoulder. My believe is the small space and larger bullet dia doesn't allow the pwoder grains to be pushed up to fill it.My opinion and a couple of $$ will get you a cup of coffee.

boom stickrr340
yeah, the 66 will need a longer mag to make sense but the 62 will have no issues.
i need to find out how long untrimmed 66 brass is to see how much we can get away with...
thanks fer the drawing
