If this rifle is on an Interarms mauser it was put together by a friend of mine and the chamber was the 2nd chamber cut with my reamer because I doubt if there are too many 416/280 AI in eastern Oregon if I can give any other info let me know. Lynn

A 411 Hawk will do the same things, you can get properly headstamped brass and there are 100s out there. Plus there are bullets designed for that velocity envelope in .411.

Is Z-hat still making the 411 Hawk? Looking at their site as to brass they are now using Quality Cartridge. They don't list the 411 Hawk. QC still does on theri site but $50+ for 20. Z-hat does not list dies for the 411 Hawk either. Just the 411 Express which is the 411 Hawk left at 2.6 or 2.65". The dies ate something like $176. Had z-hat got his turn around fixed? There were a lot of complaints over the last couple of years. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

The 411 Hawk is just an improved 400 Whelen with the shoulder moved forward. If you don't care about the headstamp, you can make them from 35 Whelen brass. As for the "complaints", news to me, would appreciate any documention you could provide. Since I published Fred's book, (that is my 400 Whelen on the cover) I am very sensitive to internet slander with no hard facts to back it up. Thanks!

One of several threads from around the time he moved location. http://forums.accuratereloadin...451082741#8451082741 I've also sent you a PM. I know I tried to contact him he wouldn't return calls. However the reamer rental phone number always worked. Maybe it was all because of his move or trying to work at McGowan. That is why I asked the question. There are a couple of modern day 400 Whelens. Like you say the Hawk, Fred also lists the 411 express which from my talking to him is his hawk taken deeper to use his 2.6 or 2.65" Cylinder brass. My 400PDK. At one time Ed Plumer who started AHR was going to build a 400 or 411 Howell I "think" Wayne at AHR still has the reamer. Here is my 400PDK with 300gr second left and 400gr second right. Loaded to the same OAL there is not much difference between them. Using the cannelures the longer cases do add velocity. My PDK accuracy loads for 300s are around 2675 and 400s at 2265. Both 50-75fps below max. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

Well there was enough whining on that thread for menopause meeting of Obama women. Fact is rare indeed is the gunsmith who ever meets a date. Most of them get their time wasted by phone calls from us. Fred and I had no issues and, trust me, publishing a book is a lot harder than building a rifle. In WILDCAT CARTRIDGES, Mike Petrov has a whole chapter on the 400 Whelen that should put all the doubters to rest once and for all. If you need more whump just get a 400 H&H and be done with it. Holland & Holland will build you a nice one for about 35,000 pounds sterling and it will only take a couple of years. OR you can build your own for about 3-4 grand like I did by reboring and restocking a 700 Classic 300 H&H. If you can't get it done with a 400 gr bullet @2550 fps, you may want to reconsider your intended trophy. Much nicer rifle to shoot than any "as issued" 700 in 416 Rem or any RUM.
