boom stick425 westley richards catting
the 425 westley richards is an interesting cart...
it has a .470" rim and a .541 casehead or virtualy the same as the 404 jeffe .544
it was the most powerful bolt action in 1908
the big nono is the rebate similar to the 500 jeffery.
interesting thing is being able to rebarrel an 06 to have a d.g. gun
from what i gather you could make better brass by using rum or 404 jeffe instead. use trimmed 404/rum brass in a 425 dies to make an unrebated version. seems simple enough and very different from the hordes without the rebate issue.
all the nostalgia none of the problems. iy you use cast bullets and rum brass it would be cheap too
cheap action, normal avaliable reamer and dies, cheap strong brass (if you use the rum) and shoot with an extended pinky, erect pinky, pinky boner or however you call it

425 w.r. unrebated?
425 boomie?
woodleigh makes 2 410 grainers for it
another possibility is to neck up or down for a std mag length boomer. make a std action 404, 458, 400/416 ect...
any coments?
Boom Stick,
You channeling me again??? Just received 200 RUM cases for necking up to .35, .408", 0.411", 0.416", 0.423" and 0.435" etc... over the next few weeks. One of the thoughts for a 602 I have coming is to rebore the barrel to 0.435" and use the full-length RUM case. Note a similiar thing was done but using a 375H&H or 416Rem case to produce the 435 PH. That puppy uses 44Mag dies to neck size the cases ... keep pressures sane and you wont need to FL resize ... but when you do ... bet you a 458Lott or 470Capstick die will work as a body die. Not sure how I can body size a 300RUM though??
I'll email Geoff McDonald after posting this for confirmation ... but the 435 PH was developed around a 0.435" 450gr FMJ that Woodleigh is said to have produced. If any are available, I'll pick some up for a look see.
Another thought is a 300WinMag opened to accept the 0.435" projectile ... but as always, too many ideas and not enough $$$ to fund them

Cheers...

boom stickthe good thing about this is the value and ease...
.532 shell holder, 425 dies and reamer...turn a win mag into a minirebated 425 w.r. with ease...
midway has dies...
you could use cast bullets and 50 cent brass, surplus powder to get a heck of a boomer...

boom stickp.s. i have necked a couple pieces to 458...looks good.

My first wildcat that used a .425 WR necked down case was a 8mm X .425WR X2 1/2" IMP. This was done in 1995. The two available sources of bras at the time were to soft for wildcating at any reasonably high pressure and bolt thrust.
Right on its heals was the .358 X .425 IMP. Same story. Both rifles had their bolt faces opened up to take the .404 cases. The 8mm chamber had to be slightly lapped. Tried to get Bell to make some strong .425 brass but they were not interested.

the_captainI know the .358 Lee Magnum has been done off the 425 WR brass. Case length 2.60" with a .480" neck. Capacity is 98 gr water. It appears to beat the 358 Norma by a small bit - maybe 100 fps.
If you are thinking about using RUM brass to make WR cases, isn't that about the same as a 425 AR then? Shoulder angle would be quite different, if you are matching the original, of course.

boom stickwell the beauty of this is the good cheap rum brass or the unrebated 404 but more expensive brass
the problems are now fixed...cheap strong brass and no major rebate.
no custom reamer
no custom dies
it is just modernizing the original...
even the original 404 had a rebate but that was remedied over time and nobody is pissing their pants
soooo the original standard action big bore d.g. gun with a tweak and no more brass issues...if you need the headstamp just stamp some unstamped basic brass.
everyone is happy...
it is the great grand daddy of the a.r. line of carts.

boom sticki hereby rename this cart the 425 crusher! aka 425 w.r. unrebated aka 425 w.r.r.r. (w.r.reduced rebate)
long live the crusher!
it only took 99 years to correct the rebate.

the_captainWell, boom, if you do make any 425 WR brass out of RUM and leave the rim unrebated, please post pics! I bet it'll look pretty nice and be very strong. I think I'll stick with the 458 AR I have in progress, though.

boom sticki am working on it...but it would look similar to this
this is a 404 case necked to 458 trimmed to 2.65" just imagine more shoulder and a longer neck...

l to r, 404 jeffe, 425 from 375 rum, 425 w.r. factory, rum 425 again and 9,3x62
Boomy,
Oh God!

Awhile back I made a comment that Remington's bean counters were so "bright" in bringing out what the market doesn't want, that they'd actually consider a 425WR in a Rem700 action. Now you've shown it just may be possible.

Show us the 338RUM opened to 0.435" and a projectiles seated if you can ... please.
Cheers...

boom stickwith a little help from my friends...
i shipped a few rum cases to be formed to 425 w.r. and the rebate left at .532" for the 425 CRUSHER!
find a useless 7 mag, rebarrel and you too can have a 425 CRUSHER! with a rebarrel, chambering, feeding ect...
back then it was called the poor mans big bore (how appropriate) because people could rebarrel a mauser and viola...
today it can still be the poor mans big bore since you can buy dies and components relatively cheep and with the help of the 404 resurgence and the rum brass on a standard action...
the 425 old school velocities shoots a 410 grain bullet @ 2350 fps for 5000 ft lbs of energy...back then that was a big deal. production rifles were the same year as the 404. so they were cousins af the same era.
its an interesting way to get a nostalgia cart to be functional and relatively cheap...the poor mans big bore returns! (without the rebate issue)
