45-70 subsonic ???
Hey guys....I have read recent articles on subsonic 45-70 rounds using Trailboss.....and some of articles have used firearms with barrel twict rates up in the 1-20" range......Ive been loading whisper rounds from JDJ for a while now and have quite a bit of knowledge in reloading 300....338....416...and 510 whispers...my question is that some folks are shooting sub 45-70s with guns....ie, NEF single shots...with twists of 1-20"....which is generally correct of 45-70s.....but how are they stabilizing 405 grain subsonic bullets from something like a 1-20"...as this goes against all ballistic physics???? Does any body have any experience with sub 45-70 rounds and twist rates????

Although not right on topic-- I load my 450 Watts with 19 grains of Trail Boss, I have not chronographed but no sonic crack and mild report.
I use 405 cast from Lasercast and gas check cast from Cast Performance. The gas check shoot a lot better, using iron sights so most of the group size is due to me.
These loads make the gun fun to shoot, I do not plan on using it for BIG game as it is a single shot Rem Model 30, but may use it for deer or hogs.

I love the idea of a subsonic 45-70 =)!
A bull barrel with a 1 in 9 twist?
550 grain cast spitzers?
460 Steyr bullets?
500 grain rifle bullets...
I think a rebarrel Ruger #1 would be a better platform with a new barrel.

A few reasons
High BC projectiles shooting accurately long range.
Sound suppressed rounds
Low recoil

I load subsonic 45-70's in my guide gun. It's a youth load for deer hunting. Trailboss + Rem 300gr HP = ~1000fps and very little recoil. Good accuracy at 50yds, less than 1.5".

I've got a ton of 405's and 525's but never attempted to try them subsonic.
