I have been thinking about .348 wins for some time. I have a new idea a Flat nose 9,3 loaded in a .444 Marlin case. To function out of 1895 lever action. Would this work. I was thinking of a minimun taper too. I want to call it a .361 Express since the .360 express name is taken. Should I proceed or shelve it??

Use a proven cartridge in the M 1895 instead - the 9,3 x 53 R Finnish. A number have been rechambered for it.

it already exists as the 375 jdj,,my Idea is to neck the 350 rem. to 9.3( for class ) and rebarrel the marlin 450 levergun,,keep the flat point for shorter c.o.a.l.,,the rim size is the same and the follower and carrier are cut for the belt already [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

Aleko, do it. If we all follow Crapcano's lead, nothing new would ever be developed, because what we have now is already "proven".

What an idiot.

I should probably write "rebored" (though I do not know the dimensions of the M 1895 musket barrel by heart). The great advantage of the 9,3x53 R is that almost nothing has to be altered (magazine, breech face); it is just a neck-up of the cartridge for which the M 1895 was already factory chambered.

There is a great feeling you will have when you take the completed rifle to your shooting spot for the first shot. When your idea goes bang, it is all worth it. I think you should try all the wild ideas you have money for. Carefull, it can be very addictive. I like the idea by the way.

Here is some preliminary data

9,3 x 53 R has a 255 mega at 2300 fps out of a 24 " barrel

9,3x57 mm has a 255 mega at 2250 fps out of a 24" barrel

.444 Marlin has a 265 Flat point out of a 22" barrel at 2300

So I am thinking this is about the max performance we should see out of the 9,3x.444 about 2100 to 2200 with a custom 280 grs bullet out of a 22" barrel

I was thinking about using a gain twist barrel to keep pressures lower.

Ideas??

Thanks, Aleko

JD Jones has also already done this also. He of course calls it the 9.3 JDJ .444 necked down. I have some data if you are interested, just drop me a PM.
