Here is my original thread:

Voice of Reason

I have been wanting a 458 "fill in the blank" for quite sometime now. I had initially set my mind on the 458 Lott and began to research here and elsewhere. The "bubbas" were gracious enough to invite me out for some dangerous jug shooting to try out some of the various 458's. Hog Killer let me tee off a few rounds with his 458 Lott and Jeffe was kind enough to introduce me to his 470 AR. Long story short...given the performance I was looking for (23-2400 fps w/ 500 grain) the 458 AR seemed to fit the bill nicely and at lower pressure than the Lott. Being a lefty I am semi-limited to cases with a regular mag bolt face unless Montana miraculously gets to 400 orders for a LH PH anytime soon.

I picked up one of the last remaining off the shelf Win M70 CRF Classics in 7 Rem Mag for a very reasonable price. Shilen barrel was sitting on my door step in less than a week and a half from the order date...I almost fell over when it showed up. Found a LH Boyd's stock on special for $40 bucks delivered. Dropped it off at the smith about 2 weeks ago and the rifle should be ready any day now.

After selling the takeoff barrel and stock I would estimate I will be all in about 1300-1400 bucks which comes in below anything I can buy off the shelf in a lefty...worth owning. I will post pics as soon as it is complete.

As a side note, Jeffe has in no way offered me anything to endorse his rounds. He is a true gentleman and has offered both his time and knowledge through this project. I feel given the repect he has shown me the least I could do was to provide positive feedback regarding his efforts. The AR line of rounds truly fill an intriguing niche and I hope they catch on.

I do have to chuckle about the fate of the 7mm Rem Mag ... the cheap one I have in progress is based on a Parker-Hale commercial Mauser action ... also in 7mm Rem Mag ;>Wink

Action came from the classifieds here. Barrel is in progress. Action bottom metal is on order. Dies are in. Ultra Mag cases came from the classifieds here. First 40 are done and action proving dummies are loaded.

2.5x Leupold Compact with a Premier Reticles A4 (the spare from my Rigby) is mounted on Leuopold QRW rings.

Bold trigger is on the action.

Cheapo stock is in. Will set up on the mill tomorrow to cut the relief for the trigger.

Need to determine the taper of the barrel. Get the barrel chambered and mounted, and make the recoil lugs and sighting stuff.

Shot a Rick_R's Lott on a Parker-Hale to assure myself that I could tolerate the recoil ... and it's OK Wink

Jeffe is INDEED a true gentleman! And a heck of a cartridge designer.

I'm thinking I might end up building a 458 ar as well. I've long wanted to build a 45 acp rifle to experient with heavy cast bullets and light powder charges. I see (gasp) ER shaw has 25" .458 barrels, which is a perfect candidate for the experiment. I figure when the novelty wears off, and once I find a cheap enough donor 7 mag dancing I'll be on my way to a 458 AR.

I also have been to a Good Ole Bubba Shoot with Jeff and had a great time at the shoot and also put down a few charging water bottles. As a result of this shoot I also was inspired to build a 458 AR. Mine is going to be on a 1917 Enfield and will wear a Bauska Barrel which is currently in the none tapered blank stage. Will be working on the rifle during the time between hunting trips this season as I will doing the build myself.
Hats off to Jeff for his design.

Should be any day now Keith...just waiting on crossbolts to come in. I will post pics as soon as I get it...granted it may stay "in the white" for a little bit but it will go bang none-the-less.

I ended up going with a 24" tube so I am curious to see what that equates to velocity wise...we will see.
