What can I convert a 7mm Rem Mag into using the same barrel??
I have a Model 700 long action chambered for the 7mm Rem Mag. The problem is the chamber is ringed, so only really low pressure 7mm loads can be used. I have thought about using a manual reamer and converting it to something else, but not sure what. This project has a tiny budget so a new barrel and a gunsmith isn't really an option.

One big issue is the barrel is only 23 inches long. At the time, 1968, the Remington catalog listed this caliber as a 26 incher but someone didn't get that memo when they made this gun.

Any suggestions???

I prefer my fish raw, my meat extra rare, and P.E.T.A on the BBQ. Any questions?

On www.ammoguide.com there is a built in feature in which you can pick a cartridge and ask about all re-chambering and re-calibering options.

Robert You may be better off trying to find an almost new take off barrel from a gunsmith who is building custom rifles. either get him to install the barrel or check around and find a smith who will do the job reasonably. You get a reamer and start playing with it you could change headspace and you could be headed for a wreck. The way I see it you can't afford NOT to fix this right.

There are usually several Remington 700 take-off barrels in 7mm Rem Mag on Gunbroker. Probably cheaper and easier to have 1 of these take-off barrels installed than to have your existing barrel rechambered.

That's a pretty short barrel for anything that's 7mm and fits a long action. Something like a 7mm RUM or 7mm STW would clean up the chamber, but those are probably not the best in a barrel that short.

7mm Mashburn Super Mag would be a good choice.

If the chamber is ringed, the 7STW is not a viable option. It has the same body diameter as the 7RMag. How do I know? I had my 7RM converted to 7STW...although now I wish I had not done that.

Robert: If you have a pair of calipers, and a reloading manual, you should be able to figure out which case and case head would work in your application. Considerations would be bolt face, and case body diameter. You could measure the "ringed" case, see where it is out of spec, and how much metal would have to be removed to "clean" up the chamber. I have done similar things in chambers, like moving shoulders forward etc. What I have done, simply requires a dial indicator, a cleaning rod, and a reamer. Set up the cleaning rod, or any rod that can be indicated to contact the reamer, indicator at zero. Turn in the reamer until you have reached the point you previously figured out. Pretty easy, and if you pay attention pretty fool proof.
