Does anyone know of a wildcat with the 45/70 case necked down to .416 with at least a caliber of neck? This should be a great cartridge for a light, short single shot, such as Encore or No. 1.

416 Barnes. As shown in Ken Howell's fine book.

Thanks, MuskegMan. It looks like this one is designed for lever actions, keeping the neck too long and the COAL too short for max velocity. Properly throated in a single shot, it could give another 50 fps or so.

You could run a 416 Rem. Mag reamer in 2.1" and cut the rim seperately and then size the brass with a shortened 416 Rem. die as in this case.

What do you think, is it possible to do same but non-rimmed version from shortened .416 Rem brass ?

There is a 416/348 I think called the GNR there is a 416 Express which is the 416/350Rem Mag. Any number of combination out there. The B&M and Compact gives you large capcity in one case and no rim in both.

If your not working with a lever action, then all sorts of wildcat .416s are available..the best is probably the 416 Chatfield Taylor,(416/338), but short of a lever gun I see the .416 Rem as the best of the bunch. In a lever gun I would opt for a Win. mod. 86 in a necked down version of the .348 case, several of those exist today.

In a short gun as the poster describes I think you would be limited by the amount of recoil you can stand, probably max would be the 358 or 350 Rem necked up to .416 and it would still be horrific I suspect..

I believe PO Ackley did a 416 Alaskan, which also isn't a 45/70 based round

Chadd and I made up some dummies for a 416/45-70 (what we called it) about 2002 but didn't do anything with it though FP 350 gr bullets would work in a lever gun

I have heard of some BLR being converted to 416Ruger. Apparently they work OK.
