What can be made of the humble .308win, an AI version with a steeper neck?

I will have a 308 barrel floating around, because I want to rebarrel the rifle to 22PPC, so I though I might turn the other barrel into something different.

Any suggestions?

How about putting it on a milsurp action and making a 308X57 based on the 8X57?? The old mauser round is a great one, same shoulder as a 308 so accuracy potential is there in theory. Making it in a .308 would afford a much better bullet selection and it would give more powder capacity than a 308 AI. Brass could be formed from 8mm or 30-06. Thats one Ive considered myself, can you tell? [Big Grin] For certian it wouldnt be accused of "the same thing that everyone else has". [Wink] Actually if I made one it would be on the hopes that it could fire 180+ grain bullets as fast as an 06 but as accurate as a 308. Otherwise it wouldnt be much different from either one.

If you have the .308 barrel you could work with either the .300 WSM (developed from the .348 Winchester case converted from rim to rimless) or the .300 SAUM (developed from a rebated and shortened version of hte .404 Jeff case).

If I was going to do a wildcat .308, I would look at the .376 Steyr case. It is based on the 9.3X64 case shortened.

Or maybe I would just stick with the .300 Savage! [Wink]

Don't forget to go with the 10" twist over the 12" twist standard in .308s so you can use heavy bullets.

I think your choice of action may dictate what you can do.

I am planning to run a 308 reamer into a 308 chamber .210" farther and use FL444 marlin brass in a single shot break action. This will clean up the long throat, more case capacity and a rimmed cartridge. I can resize it with a 308 and a 444 for the web. Reforming is easy by annealing the cases and slowly running into a 308 die.

If you run a 30-06 reamer into a .308 you will have a double shoulder.

You have to cut some threads off the barrel and then re-chamber..

allways check the book before doing conversions.
