I tried this in reloading with no response (what do those guys know anyway....)

So, I'm thinking of having Shaw spin up an ultralight SS 375-338 barrel to use as a true foul weather thumper. I don't want to spend a ton on dies, I seem to remember either Hornady or Lee (?) offering dies for this caliber in the $50 range. Am I making this up? If they aren't available I'll go with a set of CH4D's.

Also...I've heard that there is a slight difference between 375/338 and 375 Taylor, true? If so, how would one coordinate this with the chamberer and die maker?

Huntingdon's lists them in RCBS. Price is a bit higher than $50. I think around $140

Can the Steyr match the Taylor ballistics? The other concern is I was going to do this on a stainless Savage I have. I can do the bolt head swap and barrel install myself but with the Steyr I'd have to have the bolt head custom cut and while I can just order a stamped belted amg box for $9 I'm not sure how feeding would be with the intermediate round. I really like this cartridge and have looked hard at it but it seems a waste to put it in a LA and waste that space--will it fit in a 700 SA? I know you've done them on Mex's which is about perfect. In your opinion, would it make sense to do this on a 110?

the steyr is somewhat smaller than the taylor, in max capacity, though I have easily get 2400 with 300gr bullets from a 25" barrel...

if a savage bolt head was available, I would strongly suggest you go ahead with that (savage and 376), so you have your stainless one..


would be neat if we could talk savage into chambering their 110 or 10 in this caliber... with an accu-trigger, in a stainless (mine would get black BBQ paint ) and their light synth stock,,, about 20" barrel, and you are SET

Since the savage uses the magbox for feeding, this is a pretty straight forward deal,,, bolt head, mag sheet metal, and it will feed a 3.08" perfect.

I am going to do one on a yugo m48, sooner or later.

Snowcat, I bought dies from CH4D for my .375 Taylor. I don't know if there really is a difference in the .375 Taylor and .375-.338. My chamber reamer came from....4D IIRC, modified by Dave Manson to include a set of floating pilots to match your barrel. I use .338 WM brass, make one pass thru the .375 Taylor die. IIRC again, the dies were in the $40-60 (actually, they were $69, I looked it up) range, but it's been a while so don't quote me. The CH4D dies were rougher finished than RCBS dies, but my gun apparently can't tell the difference. Do a search or two in the Wildcatting forum and the Reloading forum for the .375 Taylor, because I posted a bunch of reloading and chrono data back when I put it together. My elk load is 70.0g of RE-15, Fed Mag rifle primer, and 270g Barnes TSX @ about 2700-2725fps. I used a #4 Shilen CM barrel, 23" long from the shoulder of the action. I've seen over 2800fps with the 260g Nosler Accubond, but it wasn't as accurate and I just don't see the need for it. My gun REALLY likes the Barnes TSXs. I think the .375-.338 (or .375 Taylor, as I prefer) is a great round. This is the one that should be a factory round. I haven't tried it yet, but I may try some slow powder loads, aim for 2300-2400fps with the TSXs for a deer load, just so I get to hunt with it more.
