This seems like a logical wildcat. Has it been developed; and, if so, by whom. Regards, AIU

He has written a great book and done an excellent video for AGI on the subject of wildcats, worth getting IMHO.

If a 416RM doesn't ring your bell get a 416 weatherby Mag, no need to create another cartridge

Raamw, let me explain. I have a 338 RUM already. Love it! I just want to switch out the barrels to a 416 RUM, then I'm legal for dangerous game. It's easy and cheaper to switch barrels than get an entirely new gun. Regards, AIU

Why wouldn't a 416Rem mag work in a 338Rum action? Or like raamw said a 416Wby?

As usual just my $.02

Ramrod, the gun feeds 338 RUM nicely, should feed 416 UltraCAT nicely as well. The 416 UltraCAT should produce 2700 fps with 400 gr. Nosler Part with 26.5" barrel (~6600 ft#) - plenty for anything. The 416 Wby requires a different action. AIU

You are right should have had and extra coffee.

As to the UltraCat good luck at getting anything from Z-hat. Besides who needs a 400gr at 2700fps. Big Grin Bet the 416Rem would feed just as well.

Ramrod, Z-hat will not be in the picture at all. RCBS makes the dies and my gunsmith will bore and mount the barrel. Regards, AIU

Ramrod, I think he's going to use the 338 RUM reamer, which he already has, but headspace the job for 375 or 300 RUM with a borrowed headspace gauge and have a second .416 neck reamer made, once I send him a 416-375 RUM case with a seated bullet. Regards, AIU

That will work as long as removable pilots. I cut everythign from 7mm to 416 with my original 280PDK reamer. New pilot neck and throat reamer and off I go.

Sounds like you are well on your way to your cannon. BOOM

Enjoy

That's the plan. Regards, AIU

PS. I've ordered some SUPERFORMANCE powder...and maybe I'll get 2800 fps with 400 gr. bullets...no just joking.

Before you spend too much $$$, to build a rifle for Africa, better make sure you have appropriately head stamped brass. Otherwise your stay in Africa could be, ummmmmmmmmm, shall we say; complicated and unpleasant...

Rich

I had head stamps and barrel markings checked in both Zimbabwe and South Africa in the past two years.

Why not a 404 Jefferey switch barrel? The RUM is an improved 404 case. Should work out well. The correct headstamp on the brass can be an issue too.

If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!
