Has anyone necked up the 300 win mag to 9.3? I suspect it would perform similarly to the 9.3x64 but that case is an oddity and has never caught on in the USA. The 9.3 heavier bullets have very good SD and I wonder how a little more powder would enable the rifleman looking for excellent bullet weights to increase effective range over say, the 9.3 x 62.

Just wondering.

jsl3170, I'm not a wildcatter but I have heard of doing a 9.3 on a 338 win mag case which gives similar performance to the 9.3x64 without the case availability issue. Just my humble opinion but I think the 300 win mag case would be a problem due to the very short neck. I'm always interested in anything 9.3 so let us hear how it turns out. Les

just wondering les. not doing so. but if anyone else does i'm equally interested to hear results.

wasn't the short neck a complaint originally brought up about the 300 win mag?

have seen 2 new 9,3 Rounds at IWA-Fair.

A 9,3 based on a 300 H&H-Case made in Finnland, and a 9,3 RSM based on a 300WSM Case. Both having the same performance as a 9,3x64

jsl3170, that was kind of my point. There are some who believe the neck is too short on the 300 win mag case for .308 caliber bullets, Im not sure I quite agree. But with the larger diameter bullets of .366 this can only exacerbate the problem and I do believe this would be something worth worrying about. But I could be wrong and it may work. I dunno. I have given some thought to doing the 9.3x338, I think it would take care of a lot for me. Les

I think Norma made some poor choices with their magnums, which is reflected today in their lack of popularity. I wish they had chosen instead the 8mm Norma Magnum and the 9.3mm Norma Magnum, both based on the cases for their 308 and .358, respectively.

An 8mm Norma magnum would have made all the 300 magnums envious. A 9.3mm Norma Magnum is a dream cartridge, but I really like the 9.3x338 since it's a little shorter OAL, and thus has room to spare in practically any std length belted magnum magazine. It has plenty of powder capacity - anything more is just for kicks - pun intended.

Be aware that Redding has the specs for the dies, about $150, and Pacific Tool and Gauge makes a reamer, about $150, that is perfectly matched to the Redding dies. Thus no issues between the dies and chamber with that combo. Any other combo, and ya get what ya get.

Have you been able to Chronograph any loads yet ? I would be very interested to hear how you got on with this project. What twist barrel did you use ? Have you done a write up of it ?

Cheers,
John

Personal opinion, but I think a CZ 550 in 9,3x416 Rigby would just be the cat's ass for everything.

That would be an interesting wildcat, especially since the big CZ safari action would feed it. I would like to play with one, but I don't want to fork out the money for that toy.

My next wildcat is a 323 Hollis, which is the 308 Norma necked up to 8mm. I already have the dies (Redding), reamer (PTG), action (SS Ruger 77 MKII), stock (McMillan), barrel (Douglas or LW), and Scope (Leupold 3.5x10). It's just a matter of assembly by a good gunsmith. This is a rifle I'll shoot often, whereas the big 9.3x416 I probably wouldn't shoot regularly.

I believe the .366/416 already exists and is called the 366DGW after the gentleman who come up with the idea. The .366 Rum should also be a good cartridge but is .009" worth building a rifle for? Really what could a 366 Rum do that a 375 Rum can't?

I have fired a 366 DGW, in fact, I believe I have fired the first one made. It's listed in Cartridges of the World. Pretty close to a 378 Bee if I'm not mistaken.

Not sure I really see the point, actually. That particular rifle was built to come in at 12 lbs all up and had a muzzle break or at least muzzle break looking holes drilled into the barrel banded front sight. It felt like a pig and kicked like a 20 guage.

I'm not really into wildcat cartridges, so if I'm doing one, it has to be practical, at least to my thinking. I thought a long time over the 9.3x338, and because it is about as simple as a wildcat gets is the main reason I chose it, and also because it does all I want to do with the 9.3mm, in a rifle light enough to carry well.
