boom stick375 SPC AKA 375-6.8 SPC. 6.8 SPC and 375 Winchester...Too close not to notice...
Thought using 375 Win dies and reamers would be a neet cheap wildcat idea for making a "Big bore" out of the 6.8 SPC case. Basicly a magnum 375 pistol cart for ar15's/Ruger ranch guns and micro bolt actions.
Pretty much just expand SPC brass to 375 and shoot 225 grain flat nose bullets @ 2100

gvnwstI like the idea. I have designed a .375" grendel based cartridge, this is the perfect counterpart

Of course, yours doesn't need a custom reamer or die set by the looks of it....?

Exacto!
Use all off the shelf stuff so no waiting and low cost.
expand SPC brass and go to town.
I think using the 6.8 SPC reamer with a 375 neck/throater would be best for reaming and use shortened 375 win dies for reloading.
No shoulder to form or mess with.
I kinda liken it to a fatter 357 Maximum.
Would be a nice black bear/hog/deer round.

boom stickThese 225 grain hornady spire points would be killer for 250 yards and the 300 grainers would be good for subsonic
These flat point 225's would be best for capacity and expansion

gvnwstCan't see any image...?

boom stickOK... Fixed the link.
I think there would be a max of 50fps diff between the Gren case and SPC case so the 375 SPC would be a better ROI IMHO

fireball168Silver State will almost undoubtedly sell you basic SPC brass.

boom stickFireball... thanks for the tip.
What do you think of a 375-SPC?
13 March 2009, 06:55
fireball168Think I'll form one this weekend and see how it feeds in a CZ 527.

boom stickI sooo Want a CZ 527

Your 375 SPC will have a somewhat smaller case capacity to the 375 Win yet your target velocity is very close. The listed pressure for the 375 Win loads are not exactly anemic. What will the case capacity be and what pressure do you plan to operate it at? (If I may ask). Oh, what twist rate will you be using? (I am working on something similar but using a 303 Brit case in a short barrel. I am hoping to drive a 300gr cast bullet to 1800fps).

303GuyOh, I think you have a great idea!

boom stickWell as far as preasures go... keeping it to SPC presures make the most sense... with the higher preasures getting 375 Win velocities should be doable. The flat nose 220 Hornady bullet @ 2100 would be great. For the 375 Win Hornady figures, in the 6th edition of their reloading handbook, show that their 220 grain FP Interlock bullet can be driven to a MV of 1800 fps by 31.1 grains of RL-7, and to a MV of 2200 fps by a maximum charge of 38.0 grains of the same powder. Hornady used Winchester cases and WLR primers in developing these loads. The muzzle energy of a 220 grain bullet at a MV of 2200 fps is 2364 ft. lbs., and the trajectory looks like this: +2" at 100 yards, 0 at 150 yards, and -5" at 200 yards. According to my Rifle Recoil Table a 7.5 pound rifle shooting that load should come back at the shooter with 17.1 ft. lbs. of recoil energy.
Duplicating this in the 375 SPC would be the goal and with the higher preasures and loading out to 2.3" that seems doable.
This is just a concept but I would think a 1 in 12 twist would be good.

303GuyYou wouldn't happen to have a mini-14 lying around you could convert? That gun would be as rugged as the concept cartridge!

(It is also the only semi-auto I would personally want to hunt with - I did for years and thought it was great! But I always wished for a more substantial cartridge.) I have been able to tame the muzzle blast and recoil of my 303 Brit and I am betting the same would work just great in a micro-actioned rifled. I need to get a move on with my 375/303! With a fiber-glass stock and thin walled, short barrel it should be pretty light too. It's going to kick if I don't tame it!

boom stickNo Mini 14 =(
Excited to see the 375 SPC dummy from fireball

boom stickThese 200 grain Sierra pro hunter bullets are cheap and I wonder how fast they can fly???

boom stick
These 235 woodleigh protected points have a functional impact velocity down to 1900 fps...
that might be good for 150 yards on game

fireball168Thought I had some SPC or 30 Remington cases, can't seem to find any of them though.

boom stickbummer... anyone got some spares???

303GuySo this cartridge is going to head-space on the case mouth - cool! That means no case stretch! I would like to head-space my 375/303 on the mouth but the neck is sooo thin. And since mine is intended to be a bush rifle, it needs to be reliable so I dare not make the chamber tight enough for that. (Unless I bell the mouth slightly. Mmmmm....) I head-space my hornet on the mouth - only possible because I don't neck size and seat the bullet in a paper cup. (Only possible because the bullet is small enough to be held firmly by the 'waxy-lube'.)
Hey, you know, I havn't come across any 375 Winchester lever actions! That's odd. I would think it to be an ideal pig hunters rifle!

boom stickBeing a straight case there would not be much case growth I think but hey... the 450 bushmaster seems to work well and that is on the casemouth. This is a skinny double stacked version.

303GuySooo... are you going to build it?

I might have slightly ulterior motives here - as my elbow-itus and lack of getting any younger kicks in, I shall be looking more an more towards lighter rifles! My recoil reducing device seems to be working real well but the rifle still takes some carrying although my rifle carrying device is working rather well too. (And of course I am having fun putting it all together!)

boom stickIt seems to be a pretty easy doable cart but I dont have the funds to play with my wildcat ideas at this time. It would be great to get some dummies made to get measurements ect. Feel free to build one if you want. It would be a fun project!

Do you have a Mini14 that needs a rebarrel?
