The cheap .50 BMG barrels seem to be long gone now, but I still find occasional bargains on .458 straight blanks. I thought about necking down a BMG to take .458 bullets.

Wildcatters being like they are, I'm sure this hasn't escaped others. I'm looking for someone who has done it before. Anyone?

I'm thinking of making one of the "Big 50" type. I already have a Maadi-Griffin build under way in 12gaFH. The barrel is only 27", but hey, it was cheap...

BMG barrels, on the other hand, are *not* cheap, but .458s are. I don't have any problem with doing my own chamber and die reamers, so I'm not limited to store-bought stuff.

I knew a guy before he was killed in a car accident that necked a 50 BMG down to a 375. It was absolutely wicked. Anyway, if he could make that work with no problem a 458 should be relatively easy.

I believe Steyr called it the 460 Steyr when they did it.

For big power you going wrong direction.
585HSM is good for 16-17000 ft lbs.
Made from BMG brass. And for long range
a 900 gr spitzer will work.Ed

I’ve seen the picture of your 585 Hubel Super Magnum (HSM) next to a 505 Gibbs. Very impressive.

I read that you turned the rim to .770, expanded the neck to .585, and trimmed the cast to 3.70 inches. I’m confused about the actual shoulder diameter and shoulder length though.

Shoulder length 2.97"
and shoulder diameter is .735".
Final base and rim .765"

Idea isn't really new, just making the
bore section a third bigger makes it easy
to get a third more bullet wt to same
speed, for a third more energy.Bigger hole
makes it possible with little faster
powder, as the case has the capacity
hold enough.Ed
