What if you took a 280 Ross, cut it down to say 1.625, and loaded it with .500 psitol bullets? Could be cool in a lever or a really beefy revo... Wink

if you took the 348 winchester and did the same, (close case, right?) you get the 500 linebaugh..........

Awefully close. A 1.4" case with .553" base vs 1.625" and .526" should be near similar capacities.
Anyway, the cutdown Ross is the 500 S&W; just foolin.
But makes one wonder how easy it might be to rechamber a 500S&W Raging Bull to 500 Linebaugh Maximum (1.6" case)....

Yeah, I know. Can't ream the barrel? I suppose you'd need to clean up the existing rifling.
Can't imagine actually wanting to switch from a 500S&W to anything!

Hmmm, interesting... I bet it could be done... as .500 is the groove of the SW and the bore of the Linebaugh, it could be done.

But, if you take the practicalities into play ..
1: the SW gun is UGLY
2: did i mention it's an ugly place to start from?
3: price - I believe you could sell the SW, and with the money you didn't spend on a rechamber/rebore, you could buy a linebaugh done for less than the total
4: did I mention the SW 500 gun is ugly?

Damn straight it's ugly. I can't believe they didn't at least try to match the barrel with the frame. It looks like Billy had a few pistol parts and made a frankenstein with it. The regular X-Frame without the German barrel looks a bit more pleasing, but I'm thinking of a Raging Bull anyway. 10" bbl, 4.75#. It ain't pretty like a python either, but if it handles like the 454 RB I'll be happy.
