Well, we just moved to a new place in San Diego, and the "back yard" is a couple miles (ok, at least one mile) of open space.

The coyotes wake me up about every night howling. A few nights ago my wife was outside after dark, and was scared by a few yotes running along our fence.....

Can't discharge a firearm in city limits...I figure I can thwack a couple with an air gun, may not kill em, but will give em a headache and keep em away...what do you think?

What caliber?

Get a good powerful .25 cal and if you can hit 'em in the head, that should kill them.

Get a 22 rifle, jam an empty soda can over the muzzle and use subsonic bullets.

Your neighbours won't hear a thing.

How do you jam the soda can on the end of the .22? Do you put it through the pop top opening and just let the bullet punch through the other end? If the bullet has to punch through the can it won't affect the accuracy? Sounds interesting. I've also heard a balloon over the end of the barrel can be a sound suppressor, but never tried it.

Be very careful with home made silencers! Many years ago as a kid I listened everybody's ideas and tried them all, man that was dumb!. The best/ worst idea was put a potato on the end of the barrel! I give you my word you will not remember hearing anything! Because your face will be plastered with mashed potatoes!

As a green teenager more than a quarter-century ago, I used a Sheridan Blue Streak in 5mm to dispatch countless animals along a trapline, and that included coyotes. Some of the sets employed drags, so the range on the shots was as much as 20 yards. They went down as quickly then as they do today with a .22 LR fired from my Dan Wesson pistol. All I used back then were the cylindrical, bullet-nosed yellow-boxed factory pellets, by the way.

In close, yes, an air rifle can do the trick with a head shot, particularly with the new, more powerful spring piston models. I'd recommend a .20 or .22 caliber and keeping the range to no more than 20 yards or so -- not always an easy task with a wary predator.

Precision is paramount, of course, but with today's breed of airguns, that is really no problem as most models are capable of astounding accuracy once you find their preferred diet.

I totally agree with Bobby. I cut my teeth on a Sheridan 5mm nearly 50 years ago also. Killed more critters with it than any other single rifle I ever owned. The .20 is deadly, have an RWS 48 in .20 and it is keeping up the tradition.

I vote for .22 caliber, any of the more powerful guns will do the trick. Heck, a .177 in the head is going to put em down if you make a good shot. With the .22 caliber the pellet will go through the ribs and make it to the vitals as long as you don't hit a shoulder. I tested my pellet gun (.22) on some recently shot doe heads, and the pellet went in the forehead, and out the back, plenty of penetration for coyote.

Love shooting precision and long range. Big bores too!

I don't know if coyote's head is more tough than head of a big male cat. I killed the big male cat by head shot at distance about 10m, the cat didn't make a step. Clean, immediate kill. I used heavy pellet (JSB Exact Heavy) in .177 HW97K

When I shoot pigeons, they have two holes, so I belive that penetration is enough, so if you hit coyote's brain, there is no way to survive (my opinion)

you dont use a soda can, you use a soda bottle. take a 20 ounce pop bottle and tape it on the end. the bullet will lose some velocity going through the plastic, but it does quiet it quite a bit. My airgun actually makes more noise than my 22 with those little 22 ceebees in it.

since these posts were 9 months ago, seems a little late to resurrect an old forum and give it new life. IMHO

He's right though. Any use of an improvised suppressor is highly illegal. Do not do this.

improvised silencer -- illegal
discharging gun in city limits - illegal
hunting without permission and/or POACHING - illegal

giving HUNTERS and gun rights people a public relations turd to cover up, like a 3 legged cat in a litter box -- criminally stupid
