Not talking power, just accuracy. The best target.22 rimfire vs the best target air rifle, which would shoot the best group at 25 yards with no wind?

With the guns Clamped down I figure a dead heat. But a good Pre Charged gun is so easy to use it would be very hard to beat one with anything that had any recoil.
I've put 29 .177 pellets in a row through a 3/8" hole at 35y with my Super 10, off a Bipod in almost still air.
With it clamped on an indoor test bench at 25y you can't tell how many shots have gone through the hole. It just doesn't get ANY bigger till the air starts running low. That's around 120 shots.

Thanks for the reply, Specialist. I figured you would know if anybody would. You sure like your air rifles, LOL. I was thinking a air rifle would be way ahead, but Probably a dead heat sounds more like it.

Penny---Did you ever get the trigger to your liking on that 10-22? If not, getting that taken care of should give you some great accuracy.

Nope, the gunsmith said he wouldn't work on it because of lawsuits and the good trigger kits cost a couple hundred dollars. He's trying to sell the 10/22 for me and i bought a Savage .22 mag. Love the trigger on it! I was having some trouble hitting squirrels with it though. Then i made a pair of shooting sticks, boy did that make difference. That savage is a good gun, i've still not got the ranges down pat, but i was hitting squirrels at 75+ yards. I don't always get them in the head, but if you do, the whole head blows up.

I was only wondering about the accuracy thing because i told someone that there was no rifle as accurate as an air rifle, because i thought that was correct. But then i realized i didn't know that for a fact. Still don't, but my air rifles DO shoot better at 10 meters than any of firearms i own.
But that's just me.

We have some 50meter prone shooters at our club.
All Anschutz and fancy gear, the precharged .177 air guns will do a better group at 35y but at 50 the .22s win out.

Years ago I read an article about a gun that did not use a primer,but used a small electrical charge for powder ignition. When you pulled the trigger,you were activating a small micro swith,thus the elimination of the mechanical action of the firing pin. The case for the bullet was actually powder so that after shooting the gun the only thing that remained was a very small electrical contact---no case or primer. The article went on to say that eliminating the vibration from the firing pin gave exceptional accuracy. Would seem to me that an air gun would eliminate a slight amount of vibration and very possibly give them a slight edge at close range. Penny in your situation of splitting pellets and hitting two targets at one time, I think you had a higher percentage of being able to do this than what you could do with a firearm.
Glad you like the Savage--the .22 magnum is actually a fine round,but I don't like them as you can't reload them and ammo price is high. I do understand not wanting to spend a couple hundred for a trigger on a couple hundred dollar gun--but if you shoot it much the price reduction on .22 ammo vs .22 mag ammo would offset it pretty quickly. I had same decision to make on my boat motor. Have a very old boat--1954 model that I had bought for $150 back in late 70's---Bought a new Honda motor for it that cost $3000.

Specialist, i was assuming any comparison between the two would have to be at the closer range favorable to the air rifle.

Carpetman, i found Fiocchi ammo online for 7-something a box and bought a quantity. So i splurge once in a while and shoot a whole box.

Whether or not the motor was a good deal would depend on how much a new boat and motor would cost. I do like Honda motors.

The fashion here at the moment for small game is a silenced .22 with subsonic hollow points.
Quiet and deadly.

Most of the .17 cal guns that everyone went crazy for last year are rusting in the gun safes.
TOO LOUD and way too expensive on ammo.

I cast my own bullets--use mostly wheel weights which some guys buy them, but I've been lucky and never had to buy them. For .22 cal my mold is a 58 grainer so I get about 120 bullets per pound of wheel weights. Cost of powder and primers have gone up--People hoarding the stuff for fear Obama is going to take it away when he comes knocking to take their guns. Even with the rising costs I can shoot a .22 centerfire much cheaper than .22 magnum and this would be a much superior round. I shoot the 58 grain bullet in the 2000-2200 fps range. A lot more ooomph than a .22 mag.
