Should I have copper fowling after 25 shots?

The other day I took out my Browning A-bolt 300wsm. I fired 10 shots(one every 2 minutes in 30 degree weather) of berger vlds. Walked up to change targets, ran a bore snake twice through and shot 10 more(smk), same as the first set. Walked up, changed target, ran bore snake again and shot 5 more(CombTech silver BT). I cleaned it today and had to use 2 applications of copper remover. Is this normal? How can I reduce copper fouling?

Bore scope the leade,as that is where the copper is originating from-tool marks.
Pulling a rope through the bore is not an option in one of my firearms.

Leaving copper behind is inhearant to the violent explosion that forces a copper bullet at 50 to 60,000 CPU press fit down a 24" tube. It will reduce with time but will never go away.

Well said Ted. This all can be covered under the 'do you break in a barrel' talks....

Keep shooting it and cleaning it--do you use any solvent or anything before running your boresnake through?? If not, IME you are only knocking out the loose powder residue etc. and not cleaning much at all. If you are letting your barrel soak for a bit with some sort of solvent and then running your snake through, it is more of a cleaning to my way of thinking.

Good luck!

Keep shooting and use Wipeout. Near as I can tell, Boresnakes are a good way to waste your money.

Thanks guys. It seems that my first 5 or so Bergers are great, then it slowly spreads. If I am testing different loads on the same day should I run a wet patch every 5 or so shots?

Typically factory tubes are rough some worse than others---a borescope will tell you what you need to know.

I like to clean as soon after a range session as possible. And I like to run a Kroil soaked patch thru the bore while it's still warm. It may just make me feel better, but it seems that the crud doesn't set up as hard that way.

Is this a new rifle? if so, you will get a very good idea about the quality of the bore by looking through a bore scope. If your bore is rough with tool marks, you will get more copper fouling.

I would not recommend cleaning after every 5 or 20 or even 50 shots in a hunting rifle. My bores get cleaned after 50 to 150 shots & I use Butch's Borshine.

Bergers are very specialised bullets and some people use them for hunting. If you are using a new rifle, I would suggest you use other hunting bullets to develop loads and get to know your rifle's quirks first. There are plenty of good hunting bullets around - Hornady, Nosler, Barnes, etc.

If you follow this procedure it will be clean no question about it. Will take a little time and a bore guide is a must but you will have a clean to the metal bore period no questions asked.

Boresnakes are good for pump and semi-auto.

If your rifle is a bolt, get a good Tipton cleaning rod and a Lucas bore guide.

You need to be careful how you clean the bore. Cleaning the bore improperly will damage the bore more than shooting will. This is why you spend $30.00 for the Lucas.

You need to solve 2 problems:

- carbon or powder residue
- copper residue

Typical solvents like Hoppe's 9, Butch's Bore Shine and Shooter's Choice are jack of all trades yet master of none. They will clean out the carbon residue yet take a long time to get rid of all the copper.

IMO, you need to use 2 solvents. Use any of the above for the carbon and then use one of the following for the copper:

- Barnes CR-10
- Sweet's 7.62

These two are potent, nasty chemicals yet they get rid of the copper.

If you want to do things as simple as possible and use only 1 solvent for everything, I would recommend the Bore-Tech Eliminator. It doesn't stink and does not have the strong ammonia that the Barnes or Sweet's have.

yes,,, you should have copper fouling after the first shot .. note, its FOULING.

you will have a couple atoms thick fouling on the first shot .. it builds .. it shouldn't make bad groups after 5-10shots, unless you have a very rough bore .. but fouling in that case SMOOTHES the bore .. (yes, friends, an even coat of copper is smoother than the barrel.. just like sandpaper quits cutting, and for the same reason.. fill in)

I always thought bore snakes worked best in 22 rimfire rifles, only. FS

I like boresnakes when on hunts just to get the dust and rain out of the bores at the end of the day. I no way do I think that they are "cleaning" the bore. But they do get the outside elements out.

Switching brands of bullets (jacket alloy) make copper fouling a lot worse.

Not if you use it to clean out moisture absorbing (and hence rust causing) dust and fluff and stuff.

Copper fouling can be eliminated completely by allowing the bore to rust a bit then fire-lapping. Thereafter, dip the bullet base in wax before seating. I kid you not!

Fire-lapping (done carefully) should reduce or eliminate copper fouling.

You should have copper fouling after one shot. And a fine layer of carbon fouling on top of it.
