A few days in the Kafue

I have just returned from spending a fantastic four days at Royal Kafue in Zambia.

I was invited over by Andrew as he knew I wanted to offer Zambia as a destination to UK, European and International hunters.

This area is owned by the local community and Andrew has been developing it over the past 10 years. When he first took it on there was next to no game in the area but slowly over time it has become a wildlife haven due to the efforts of Andrew and his team.

Andrew's Mutambashi camp overlooks the Kafue River and has a main dinning/lounge area with a bar and seating area around the fire for early morning coffee/tea and evening drinks. Off to the left is the main client chalet with en suite shower and toilet. To the right of the dinning area is a canvas tent also with en suite shower and toilet.

I arrived in camp after dark and I was greeted by Andrew and his client Max from Australia who was on a Buffalo hunt. Also in camp were Andrew's son Tom and an American called Jake who were both learner PH's.

When I woke up I was greeted to the most beautiful view.

Max had already taken his Buffalo by the time I had arrived but I managed to take some great photos of the skull on the last day I was there. He had also taken a Roan, Reedbuck and Hartebeest but I am waiting on the photos for Jake.

A couple of days later Jake had been out scouting for Buffalo and Sable and he had found a very big Sable not too far from where we had stopped to speak to the anti poaching unit. Andrew made a plan and off went to find where Jake had last seen the bull. By the time we had got there he had moved on but Andrew's tracker Michael got on the tracks and he found him after about 10 mins. What seamed like hours but was in fact only 45 mins Max had taken this stunning Sable.

The following morning we drove around looking for Bushpig but no luck and in the afternoon we went to go fishing but the boat had other ideas so had to scrap that plan. By this time the hunt was complete and we spent the evening celebrating Max's hunt with a few Whisky's.

I want to say another massive thank you to Andrew for inviting me over, I only wish it could have been for longer. I had an amazing time and hope to be back there soon hunting for myself or with some new clients.

Just a few photos to finish off

Mike, that really is a special area. Andrew has done a nice job with his opportunity to turn it into a wonderful place. His camp is nicely situated across the river from a great little marsh that is full of Sitatunga.

Lots of game, physically easy hunting, great scenery and wonderful weather, that area is a great place for a safari.

Occasionally one pops up on Andrew's side as well.

Maybe Andrew can hire us as learner PH's for a month when we have retired ?? Would be nice... Or just rent us a room and we participate in alle the hunts as " followers " ?? Or just as a barkeeper or something …

Do not all pop stars etc have such people around them all the time ? I too old to remember the word for such fans... but in my opinion guys like Andrew, Thor, Buzz, Rich should offer such opportunities to old hunters .. beer

Apart from all the holes made by Elephants feet the walking is very easy. Andrews hunting area is completely flat but at the same time absolutely beautiful.

We saw a young Sitatunga bull on trail cam at a Bushpig bait.

Nakihunter, the camp is basic but has everything one needs to have a great safari and there is always plenty of Whisky.

I can relate to the ‘Elephant Holes’. Last October, just on the edge of that marsh across the river from Andrew’s camp, I was trying (stupidly) to run down a poacher we bumped into in early dawn semi-darkness. Running full tilt, I stepped into one of those holes, crashing hard. Sprained my knee, cracked two ribs and tore my rotator cuff on my right (gun mounting) shoulder. That resulted in me having rotator cuff surgery, spending enough on co-pays and deductibles to pay for a nice plains game hunt and being ‘on the shelf’ for all of 2019 since I’m not supposed to shoot anything the kicks very much, for a year. I’ve had to buy a 28 gauge just to be able to duck hunt this year.

Jim, yes they do occur on Andrew’s side of the river as well, but Richard’s side has more habitat. You got a good one!

We took the skiff across to visit with Richard and "Sandyhunter" one day. I would love to have had the time to explore that area more.

Maybe enough of us could get Andrew and Richard to offer another AR group hunt there in late 2020. If they do, I’d be 100% for going back there.

Fantastic trophies Mike!

Photobucket sure ruins the photos with their huge watermark in the middle though. Try Imgur. It's about as easy to use as PB they don't watermark your photos.
