Last time I talked to Dirk he said all the big game concessions are closed and only God knows when they we will receive the new tenders and/or if there will be any big game hunting next year. If Dirk is right I would research everything before putting a deposit on a Caprivi Buffalo hunt next year.

The conservancies, which are tribal land, in the Caprivi and other parts of Namibia are open this year and for the future.

I hunted for two weeks, we saw fresh cheetah and leopard tracks every day. I saw one leopard while driving in a canyon. I would warn anybody wanting to leopard hunt in Namibia to fully research your hunt. Namibian Ranch leopards are SMART! You can't just hang baits in trees and expect to shoot a leopard in a few days. Dirk told me the leopards in his area seldom drag kills up trees because there are no lions or hyenas to worry about. My guess is you can expect a 30%-50% chance a killing a leopard on most ranch hunts. Dirk requires you to book a 14 day hunt at his regular '06 daily rate (1x1 is $165 ) and you only pay a trophy fee if you kill a leopard, Cheetahs are usually shot on sight. They can't be imported to the US.

Now the bad news, Dirk is fully booked in '06 and only has a few prime dates left in '07. For the money I think this is one of the best deals in all of Africa!

The dates are going fast . . . I just booked 10-20 July of 2007 for my wife and I . . . After talking to Robert and the other references provided, I am anxiously awaiting the trip. Thanks to Robert for posting and taking the time to answer my questions, both by email and over the phone!

What is the best way to contact Dirk? Would like to explore a mid to late April booking with him. Tried e-mail a week ago, but no response.

Dirk is out hunting with clients untill May 25 I am sure he will email you when he gets time. I think Dirk is fully booked for 06 and 07. If your looking for a great hunt at a fair price in 08 keep trying . You will never find a better deal.

Robert,

I just looked over the African Hunting section and read with interest a report on rabies in kudu in Namibia. Some of the reports casually mentioned several hundred dying from the disease on ranches, and Okajhanda was specifically mentioned. Did you see any evidence of this when you were there?

I am anxiously anticipating hunting with Dirk and Rita (June 26 - July 3), and while the thought of rabies in the area doesn't bother me, I find it interesting that so many ungulates would be infected.

Even though its not good news I would not get overly concerned. Kudu Rabies has been around for ever. Dirk lost 20-40 animals in 03, But he has not lost any animals this year.
