After researching countless Namibian outfitters, I found one of the most affordable plains game hunts in Africa! Last April, my wife and I hunted and toured for 21 days with Dirk and Rita Rohrmann. Dirk and Rita are nice honest people, with years of hunting and lodging experience. Dirk used to have a big game concession in the Caprivi, and Rita was born and raised in the Caprivi, she has worked in the hunting / lodging industry for many years. They now manage Okanduka Seibe, a very remote 15,000 hectare ranch near Okahandja. This ranch is amazing! It’s blessed with many trees, good grass, and most important, year round water! Trophy quality on the ranch is outstanding and hunters can expect to see gold medal Kudu, Oryx, Hartebeest, Springbok, Steenbok, Eland, Klipspringer and large herds of Hartman Zebra. Impala and Warthog are also available, but gold medal trophies are hard to come by in this region of Namibia.

We booked our hunt in April because it was the only time my wife and I could get away from work. Unfortunately, April is still in the rainy season, and as luck would have it the largest rain storm in three years hit the ranch days before our arrival. Areas of the ranch that had not seen measurable rain in years now had standing water. With the grass two feet high and the trees fully leafed, spotting game was very challenging. Even with all the drawbacks of hunting during the rainy season, it was a wonderful experience seeing the desert green! My wife and I shot 3 Kudu, 3 Springbok, 2 Steenbok, 2 Oryx, 1 Warthog, and a Hartman Zebra. Except for my wife’s Kudu and my Warthog (shot for bait), all were gold medal class.

Leopard can also be hunted with no additional daily fees if you book at least 14 days. We saw Leopard tracks every day. In fact, Leopards killed two foals less than 150 yards from the lodge two weeks before we arrived. After we left, an Italian hunter killed a 156 lb. Leopard.

Most of Dirks clients do not bring their own rifles due to all the trouble with importing guns thru South Africa. The following caliber's are available free of charge. All guns are in excellent condition and are either scoped with Swarowski or Zeiss scopes. You will only be charged for ammunition used.

.22 Hornet (Bolt Action) with a silencer great for Jackal
6,5x57 R (Blaser Single Shot)
270 Winchester (Bolt Action Rem. 700)<>
.300 Win. Mag. . (Blaser R93 straight pull)
.338 Win. Mag. (Bolt Action, Mauser Magnum Action)
9,3x 70 Mag. (Bolt Action, Mauser Magnum Action)
9,3x74R (Double Side by Side)

After you’re done hunting, you can spend a day of two dove or grouse hunting, you only pay for shells. Be sure to prearrange to have shotgun shells at the ranch. Horseback riding is also available and I would go on at least one ride while you’re there.
.

Dirk doesn’t have a huge lodge with a large swimming pool. If he did I am sure he would charge the standard $350-$450 a day. But he does have a huge ranch, nice lodge, food is great, and the trophy quality on his ranch is second to none! Dirk has a 46 inch Oryx skull that was picked up on the ranch that is number 3 or 4 in R.W. He also picked up at least 10 Kudu racks over 53 inches, two are over 58 inches.

This is the only hunt I ever been on were I thought I should have been charged more!

Good photos and trophies, sounds like you had a great trip. Is the ranch high fenced? How big is the ranch?

OK, I re-read your post and see that you said the ranch is 15,000 hectares, which is 37,000 acres +/-. I'm interested, tell me more. Also as I read you first post you and your wife hunted for a total of $195 per day. That is unreal Eeker What a deal Big Grin

The ranch is 15,000 hectares acres. With one border fence between two mountains. The other 3 sides are unfenced. The fence is used to control poachers which come in on donkeys form a town 30 miles away. ( Dirk shot 4 donkeys and 5 or 6 dogs a few weeks before we arrived; He had their saddles, shoes and spears hanging up at the ranch) There is one small fenced portion about 1000 acres, I think the previous owner use to capture game and sell it.

I am already planning a return trip with a group of friends for the entire month of May or September. I have to admit I like only paying $145 a day, My wife and hunted and toured all around Namibia for 21 days for a total of $5507 + $ 4066 trophy fees total =$9573
Dirk even gave my wife a free Oryx for her birth day and his wife bought her a $100 set of ear rings. There are many good outfitters in Namibia. I think Dirk and Rita are one of the best. Honest, Hard working people.

The only thing I found wrong with this Ranch is there are no Cape buffalo!

Thanks T.carr for posting my photos

Robert, congratulations. This is a great hunt report, and the photos are wonderful. It looks like they really have their act together, and the trophy quality is certainly above average. Way to go, and thanks for sharing this hunting opportunity with us.

I did not use a booking agent, The best way to get a hold of Dirk is by fax, You can also email him, but he has to drive to Windhoek to get email (once a month). You will never find a better deal! Literally half price of most Namibian outfitters.

Hi Robert,
I am interested in a return to Africa and the Namibian outfitter sounds like a gem to me. Was there any good Waterbuck in the area you hunted
and were the Warthog of trophy quality?

I think Dirk and Rita run one of the best hunting operations in Namibia ( For the money ) They have a huge remote ranch, trophy quality second to none, nice clean lodge and good food. Dirk's 06 daily fee is $160 for a 1x1 hunt. Which is half the price charged by similar ranches in Namibia. Dirk's ranch is not the best place for warthog, if you are wanting a gold metal warthog I would ask Dirk to arrange a side trip to a area noted for large warthogs.

Officially I was to pay $200 for the transfer to the other hunt location. But when it was time to pay my bill Dirk never charged me. I had gave him two or three hundred dollars in memory chips and batteries for his camera, which were impossible to get in Namibia. Dirk was extremely grateful, and this was his way to repay me for the gifts.

Dirk and Rita run a first class operation. Dirk is a very mild mannered PH, who love's to track game ( he calls it Real Hunting). You will drive around the ranch glassing from high ridges. Once game is spotted, you will get out and stalk. Jackals are the only thing shot from the truck. I really enjoyed the experience of following his trackers. Dirks trackers can track and find anything! Email and fax service can go out for weeks at a time at the ranch, keep emailing and faxing him you will get through sooner or later. I would highly recommend hunting the end of May - June ( Kudu rut ). If you send me your email I will email you a picture of a Leopard they killed last month . There is no better place to hunt plain's game and Leopard for $165 us a day!

Dirk and Rita now have satellite internet, so they shouldn't be too hard to contact. We've been in contact for the last week via his new ISP.

If you are looking for a great hunt at half the price charged by most outfitters for similar hunts. Don't let this hunt get away. Dirk is already 2/3 booked for 06. He but he still has all of April open and July 1 - Aug.11 open. April is good, May-Aug is the best time left to hunt his ranch.

If you decide to hunt with Dirk take my advice and stay as lone as you possibly can. Dirks daily rates are cheap!
($165 a day 1x1) After your done trophy hunting you can bait jackals from ground blinds, shoot dove's and grouse or take a drive to Swakomund for a few days.

My wife and I hunted and traveled for 21 days with Dirk and Rita last April. We had a great trip and are all ready planning a return trip in 07 to the Caprivi.

Open dates
April are still available, May 1st – 6th, September 1-7. There are two 7-10 day opening in June and July that are being held that might become available. ( waiting for deposits )

March and October are available, but I do not recommend hunting at that time of year

I didn't bring my own gun, because we spent a week in Cape Town before the hunt and I did not want to fool around with the South Africa gun laws. Dirk has a full line of first class rifles and shot guns to use. Most of the time I used Dirk's 338 win. mag, Mauser action with a Swarowski Scope.

I've got Dirk working on a Buffalo hunt in the Caprivi for me right now. I'll have to check back with him as I haven't heard from him in a while.
Since I missed my TZ buff hunt in Sept and have the airfare left over I asked him about combining a buff hunt with the booking I have with him in Sept.

Dirk had a big game concession in Namibia for a few years. I am sure he still has a few connections and might be able to get a buffalo permit. But I don't like the idea, to many things can go wrong when your subcontracting . If I had to hunt Namibia for Buffalo I would recommend booking directly with the PH with the Buffalo permit.
