South Africa 2006

We hunted with Jannie Otto Safaris from July 1st until the 12th. It was my dad, mom, my wife and myself. I can't say enough nice things about Jannie. He was the PH for my dad, and I had a young PH by the name of Zac. We hunted in the Limpopo area for four days and later moved to Zululand for three days of hunting and two days of sight seeing. The weapons we used were the Remington 700 300 RUM, a Winchester Model 70 30-06, and a H-S Precision 300 Remington Magnum. These are our photo's:

My very first African animal:

My second:

Two days later my 3rd:

Later that afternoon my 4th:

Two days later in Zululand:
My 5th animal: 49" Kudu

The next day:
My wife and I for my 6th animal:

My seventh later that day:

My 8th the next day:

I have no picture of the 8th animal. My PH and myself thought I made a good shot on the first one, however, after further examination, I hit a branch. The next shot I took was for the rear quarter to break the rear end down and put it down. They found it the next day about a kilometer from where the original shot took place. They told the PH it is a 29" Nyala. I can't wait to see him again.

My dad's animals.

On the first day he went a little wild and shot these three animals:

The next day he shot this:

The third day he wounded a Red Hartebeast.
On the forthe day he shot his Zebra:

A couple days later he shot these animals within an hour of one another:

And on the last day he shot this:

All in all it was a wonderful trip. Met many nice people and experience some of what Africa has to hold. We are planning our next safari for 2008. Maybe sooner if I work on dad a little harder.

Congratulations to you and your dad, very nice animals. Your hog has really nice tusks and the gemsbok's horns look very thick too.

Sounds like you were busy!

Can you give us the measurements on the second kudu and nyala? Not that it really matters, they are both hogs!!

Good job on the photos -- your dad's gemsbok seems to have exceptionally thick horns!

Does your gemsbok have one broken horn? I can't quite see in the picture, and I like broken horns! We saw a LOT of those on gemsbok at Etosha.

Also, did you measure your kudu? Those look like some pretty deep curls.

No, the horns on the Gemsbuck were both 34". Not huge, but respectable for where we were.

As a matter of interest, did you always shoot the same type of bullets ?

If so, what were they ? If not, what variety of stopping power did you use.

Must have been pretty heavy to have bagged some of those trophies!!

Well done.

For my first Impala, Gemsbuck, Zebra, Blue Wildebeast and Kudu, I used my 300 RUM. I was using a Remington 200 gr. Swift A-Frame PSP bullet. It had tremendous knockdown power, even when I misshit 3 of the 5 animals. 4 of the 5 were one shot kills and the Kudu I had to finish off with a second shot. For my second Impala, the Warthog and my Nyala(Not Pictured) I used a Federal 30-06 Banres TSX 180 gr bullet. 2 of the 3 were one shot kills. The Nyala was wounded (Long Story), and found the next day while we were on our way back to Pretoria.

My dad's shots were all perfect shot placements. 300 Remington Mag, 180 gr Barnes TSX bullets. I had much better results with the 200 Gr A-Frame than he did with the Barnes. The two Barnes Bullets recovered were less than desirable results. The two Swift- A-Frame bullets were perfect mushrooms. I had tried to find Barnes TSX for my 300 RUM. But they were not offered at the time we left. I now have a new bullet I can put my faith in.
