Just returned from Moz on Monday. My outfitter was JP Kleinhans Safaris. My PH was Dominique Maartens.
This was an outstanding trip/hunt. A remote area (Zambezi delta) with superb game. Camp was comfortable, vehicles good.
Great opportunities on Buff. The trophies are not huge, but very nice. My buff (first for me) was 37.5, green score 109 SCI. 12'9" croc, possibly the neatest stalk I've ever been on. Sable was just shy of 39. 28" waterbuck, good common reedbuck, and warthog. The bushbuck here are huge, though I neglected to measure mine.
Dominique is everything you could expect of an African PH, and I hope to hunt with him again. He is a superb naturalist, very skilled, and a joy to spend time with. This is the third trip I have booked with JP, and would gladly do so again.
The area is river delta flat. Lots of burning.
Stephan, our bush pilot met us and got us through the Beira airport. About 90 minutes to camp aboard a 182. We spent 14 days in camp, including a side trip to the Indian Ocean to see the last working slave house in Africa, active into the 20th century. The only civilization we saw was a village (primitive) on a Madal coconut plantation. The locals, though poor, appeared well nourished and seemed to have an OK life. My wife (her first African trip) said it was like stepping into a 1920's National Geographic.
A 14 foot croc shot by Dave Fulsom was being brought into camp as we arrived. A real "Toto, we're not in Kansas anymore" moment for her.
All in all, a wonderful opportunity to experience what's left of wild Africa.
Due to the low flood prone terrain, there are no lions or leopards, owing to foot rot. With no large terrestrial predators, the plains game, pigs and buff are pretty unmolested, and plentiful. Poaching is an issue, but JP is gearing up a pretty aggressive anti poaching program. This was his first season on this property.

In short, a great lifetime experience, and an outfitter and PH that more than pass muster. Highly recommended.

I hunted out of Mahimba Camp last year with Dominque Maartens as my PH as well. He's a great PH and fun guy as well. (Did he show you his croc scars???)

When I hunted there McDonald Pro Hunting was the outfitter. The camp seemed to be in a deteriorated state...sounds like JP Kleinhans has done some improvements. The staff there were all fantastic.

We encountered substantial poaching last year, it sounds like that is being attended to as well. I'm really glad to see this potentially nice camp getting some care!

Your trophies are very nice... and the bushbuck will definitely be a conversation piece.

Congrats on a super hunt... man that one-horned bushbuck is a toad. Moz is one of those places where you can shoot most of the game elsewhere in Africa, but it seems like a real adventure to hunt the old (former) Portugese colony!

Marty- Are MacDonalds totally out of the picture?

JP has purchased the concession from Macdonalds, and is the new operater. I think some money will change hands over the next few years, but it's JP's now to the best of my knowledge. Dominique hunts in another of Macdonald's areas part of the year.

Hunted Moz the last week of September with JP Kleinhans. He put us on buff, although with lots of walking-a true DG hunt. He is a true professional and, without a doubt, the most entertaining individual I have ever met. When we return it will be with JP.

I just got home from a week of sitting in a tree in Minnesota, and saw your post. I spoke with JP a couple of weeks ago, sounds like you had a great hunt! It also sounds like the new concession owners are having some problems.
I'd like to go back there someday.

I will not be at the shows. I've never been, keep meaning to. I'd like to meet a some of the AR folks face to face. With three weeks off in March for Zimbabwe, time off will be pretty scarce this winter.
I've hunted with JP three times, hope to again. He runs a good show, and always treats you square.

My son and I hunted plainsgame in RSA with JP and his brothers, had a wonderful time. JP did everything that he said he would do (and then some).

Good to see your report. That big croc is now living above my fireplace in Ft.Worth as a lifesize mount. Good memories of that hunt for sure. Come say hi at the Chifuti booth in Dallas.
