Started planning this trip almost 18 months ago. Timing was essential as my wife, alias my retirement plan, was just finishing her Nurse Practitioner schooling and boards in mid August, this was a much needed 4 year break after graduation for both of us. We had another couple who have never been anywhere on the African continent planning on coming along. I got in touch with Mark Young and he suggested the Sentinel ranch with Terry as a great place to take a new couple, boy was he right. Fantastic hunting, lots of game, good food and wonderful accommodations, my friend's wife is a bit squeamish and she was very happy. Thanks Mark, made my life easier knowing I had happy friends in camp and not worrying about them.

We flew in a couple days early and toured the falls. When we arrived in Bulawayo Terry informed me that giraffe I had shot in Feb and lost was still alive and well on Broadwell farm. I was on a missions trip in Feb and we got only 1/2 day to hunt and I made a poor shot on the giraffe just before dark and then flew out the following morning, I am sure some of you know that feeling. So off we go and get the job done after a barrage of bullets!!

Next day we head down to Sentinel ranch and begin a 10 day hunt, my friend Paul after a buff, kudu, impala, eland, zebra, wildebeest and warthog. I would be targeting a tuskless, buff, and hyena and then whatever else.
The very first evening Terry and I were into lee and had a perfect sun at back wind in the face situation on a small herd with couple of tusk less in it. One came close and we both looked at each other and said do we really want to be done so quickly, so we backed out and enjoyed walking with them for awhile.
Day 2 my wife came along and we were in elephants all day long, lots of close encounters in thick stuff on river banks. The evening produced a herd of what we estimated to be between 100-150 elephants with multiple tuskless ladies. We were in close and ready to shoot but had elephants almost completely around us, my wife's eyes were bigger than tea saucers!! with so many elephant within 50 yards of us we decided maybe to back out and try a different angle. We got in them again and had a very nice mock charge, wife held her ground and then gave me a huge smile after the young bull backed off. Fantastic day in the bush, I will cherish that time seeing my wife's face all day long having a blast but being scared all at the same time.

Day 3 we got up and found another herd of about 100 elephant just at first light from up on a hill. Probably 1-1.5 miles out. As we began walking we had a lion roaring off in the distance, hyena whooping it up all around and jackals sounding off for the morning, absolutely fantastic, unfortunately the wife stayed in camp this morning. As we got closer the lead elephant was a big tusk less with no dependent calf, the group was following her. We moved with the herd looking to catch up to her when something gave us away, off goes the herd screaming and running in opposite direction. The old girl and a young female stayed back though. She knew we were there but could not locate us. As she moved we moved setting up the sticks a couple of times, but she never gave us a clear heart or brain shot. As she went behind a larger tree she we figured she would come out and stop to look for us and either run away or come. She did not Stop!! She came out at about 15 yards and made a beeline for us in full charge. I hit her first and terry"s shot was about 1/2 second behind. She dropped like a rock. I was for sure we had brained her, but she was not dead. So another quick shot to the head, again missed brain but we found had penetrated her spine. A couple in heart and back of head and it was done. Tip of her trunk was 6 steps from where we stood. Awesome, this was my second elephant and I could not have scripted it better. Our first shots went just below the brain and were about an 1" apart side by side. If you look close at the video you can see where they hit.

We then used the carcass for hyena bait which proved successful on second morning.

We had 2 full days of tracking a group of old buff bulls. We had 3 groups located and liked what we saw in this group the best. On the day of the kill we got busted by the wind after spending about 45 minutes withe the group of 8 waiting for shots in the thick riverine bush. 4 hours later we made a tactical move which paid off and we got our bull. I made a poor shot on first shot and hit about 6" high on a running bull. off the ran, we jumped into the truck and drove out around the mountain they went over and got up in front of them. My second shot was at an again running bull. This time I hit behind shoulder and went through spine and one lung and put him on his nose. Very nice bull with 17 1/2" bosses.

Paul, who has never been to Africa, made a low shot on a frontal facing buff. They stayed after him for 2 days and got him the second afternoon when he dropped him with one shot and then another security shot. His was a fantastic buff, probably one he will never beat. It field measured right at 112" SCI. 41" wide deep deep curls.

I am so impressed with my 500 MDM rifle from Michael458 and these CEB bullets. My first elephant shot hit high in the trunk penetrated the skull and went all the way to the back hip bone after going through the top of the right lung and stomach!! Unbelievable!! That is like 7-8' of penetration. The 460 grain noncom hit that buff behind the left shoulder went though the spine and then was found inside the skin in front of the right shoulder, nearly 3' of penetration from a non solid. That little 20" barrel rifle is a joy to carry. Thanks Michael and Dan at CEB for making wonderful products.

Of my 12 or so safaris this one was by far the best. Huge thanks to Mark for hooking me up with Terry and knowing what our group needed in a hunt.

Big thanks to Terry for putting us in the game daily and allowing me to hunt and not being pushy and demanding.

Got to get back there for leopard!

If anybody knows how to post a video I will put that on here as well, I could not get it to go from photo bucket to this forum. I really would rather not put it on you tube and deal with all the kooks it will attract.

Brent,

You completely forgot to tell the folks that the impala pictured in your report was 27 INCHES. A true monster for a Southern impala. Big congrats!

Well done Brent. I remember talking to you about your hunt back in January and you were excited way back then. I reckon you were exploding by the time you got to Zim. Congrats to you all involved.
