Read only means only the original poster has the ability to post on the thread.

I suspect I don't need to explain the meaning behind this Poll. I for one will be voting to keep things the way they are, although I would prefer to see the ability for the original poster to delete the entire thread if they wished to.

I do believe there are far more AR members fearful of posting hunt reports than there are regulars that do post them.

Cheers
Jim

Question:
Should threads in the Hunting Reports Forum be read only.

Choices:
Yes, only the originator of the hunt report should be able to post
No, everything should remain as is at present

Jim, I voted no, because I'd like to ask questions and compliment folks on their report. Negative comments on reports are uncommon IMO. AIU

I didn't vote because these polls are really pointless. This is not a democracy, its one mans site and he makes the rules. I don't know why everyone gets upset if someone has a go at them in a post, if you've done everything legal (or have been told its legal by your PH, a man that should know the rules of his country) then post your story. If someone has a go at you, tell them to go and get Fucked. If in fact it turns out the rules have been broken or bent without your knowledge then out the PH as a dodgy prick.

If you knew you were breaking some rules then either post your story and take the hits, or keep quiet and say nothing.

Tony,

It is no difference than "voting" in politics.

One gets that "good feeling" that they are actually being part and parcel of the political process, while in fact they are not.

The Euphoria lasts a few days and then the whole process starts all over again clap

I think that the poster should be able to delete a post that he finds offensive but only on his hunt report thread. Some of us are not popular and don`t have many friends and might not get along with everybody(try to please everybody) but we still want to post a hunt report in the hopes of it appealing to anyone and feeling that satisfaction.Obviously if there is something wrong in his report he can be contacted by the moderator and asked to change that.
I also don`t like the fact that people have the right to see a hunt report even though they don`t have one posted and would never post one for whatever reason.
I can`t stand bullet promotional hunt reports either-or rifle promotional hunt reports.

I voted "no" for one simple reason....a controversial "read only" hunt report would simply generate several other threads in other sub-fora discussing the topic found controversial in the hunt report. Everyone (including the author of the hunt report) would know EXACTLY who and what was being referenced and the author who avoided getting his "feel-bads" hurt in the Hunt Report sub-forum would just experience the same thing elsewhere and in probably multiple threads. Given that, what's the point?

I voted to keep things as they are for several reasons, tendrams has covered one of them. Another is I don't think there is any harm in being able to ask questions about the hunt/travel/PH etc.

Shootaway, I don't mind the author telling us what rifle, calibre, bullet, load and how thw bullet and rifle performed. That is the good and the bad. I am not sure if this it what you mean by Bullet/rifle promotional hunts or just the ones sponserd by a company.

I'm just a typically ignorant American so I have no clue whether there is even voting in the UAE.

Damn right I vote. Damn right it makes me feel good.

AR is not a democracy and we all know that. This is your house and you can place the furniture where you wish. I appreciate being here for what I have learned. Both the good and the bad. There's plenty of both to go around.

I voted yes - so that people will post their reports and we can read them.

If there are any issues, the Moderators can remove the post.

If anyone wants clarifications they could PM the OP.

People could also start a general discussion without directly attacking a particular post.

AR will be a lot more cordial community & far less testosterone reeking across the cyber world! Big Grin

+1

Regardless of the increased (or always existing) level of animosity on this forum, this is the place on the internet for african hunting. There are some seriously experience hunters and a lot of hunting dollars tied to AR members.

I for one will be very sorry if Sam Rose leaves this website - it will be a serious loss for AR. I have met Sam at an AR dinner at DSC and he was a perfect gentleman and very informative and helpful on double rifles. I ended up buying a VC the next day. I don't think I would have bought a VC double if not for The Admiral and Sam Rose and indirectly AR.

I think a PM is the best way to ask question that might raise some controversy. It is what I would like someone to do if I post a hunt report.

I voted "NO" because I enjoy the give and take involved with Hunt Reports. When Jim and Joyce posted their Hunt Report about their trip to Etosha and Swakopmund, I asked a bunch of questions and Jim even sent me a CD of their trip.My wife and I used it to plan our trip. When I posted my first Hunt Report, a certain regular here criticized my hunting over a dry waterhole and using a laser rangefinder. I literally told him to "practice self insemination" and moved on. Another poster (WSJ) asked questions about Namibian travel, and I sent him Jim's CD. When he was done with his safari he passed Jim's CD on to another Namibia newbie. I really enjoy helping other hunters planning a trip to Namibia, just like Jim W (Frostbit) helped me.

Bud is spot on - emphasizing the positive is the way to go here and using the PM section to help achieve that end is a good thing.

IMO, getting angry over someone's negative or critical post is a mistake - and I've made that mistake and I've always regretted it.

On these anonymous internet forums, you never really know who's posting or what ax they're grinding - they could be outright crazy and playing games by trying to jerk-your-chain by baiting you into a confrontation.

Some people like to argue and fight - it excites them - don't oblige. Steer clear.

This forum has only the power you give it and no more. It is not a threat, but when used properly it can be very beneficial to all.

IE.... do not feed the trolls. Great advice above.

A bad poster is just like a bad ex, or soon to be ex wife. The more you interact with them, the more you regret it.......

And I agree Saeed. I think the problem stems from the fact that the forum is undoubtedly read by numerous federal and state enforcement types and......... has been demonstrated over and over again by posts on forums.......... the ignorance of the poster as to doing something wrong, had nothing to do with the shit and destruction that befalls him/her afterwards.

So while a few of the posters get to feel important by pointing out the potential issues that they can say is simply to prevent problems for others............ they help draw attention to a potential issue for the many layers of US bureaucracy and enforcement. A simple transgression which, as they well should know, can totally bankrupt an individual while the authorities play games with it.

This and the fact that many do not have the patience or the interest to deal with negative posters is why many do not post hunt reports. I for one would think long and hard about it beyond simple general info. Too many twits with too much time on their hand and too much of a belief in the importance of their views to bother with it. Better uses for the short time we have on this planet.

Bingo!!

The other thing I'd like to throw out there for thought is the existence of the Political Forum and Walter's Forum.

I don't attend either but some do. I've been told it's not a very civil place. I think sometimes regulars there forget their manners here after "arguing with assholes" about their country's politics compared to their own (among other topics having zero to do with hunting).
