An old friend, who probably only has one safari he still wants to do, would like to hunt sable. As far as he is concerned it is a one-animal safari: sable, sable, sable. What would be the best place/outfitter for a safari based on getting this one great trophy? _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

I saw numerous sable as well as the largest sable in Mozambique. Mark Haldane's Zambezi Delta Safaris, coutada 11 & 12. Once he gets there, he'll want to take some other critters! Best regards, D. Nelson

I agree with the above posts ..all great areas for sable AND other species. I guess it depends if this hunter wants to "experience" Africa as well as kill a sable. If so all of the above are good..if he is looking for the largest sable I would give the nod to Andrew (Royal Kafue)..if he is looking to see the MOST sable I would say Zambezi Delta. However if the hunter just wants to get off the plane shoot a sable and go home..dare I say a short ranch hunt in SA? I think Zimbabwe has a few ranches left with sable as well. All depends on what the hunter wants to get out of his safari.

Wink, Sent you a PM on the Kafue but if a chance at a monster is not really an issue like Safari2 said the Zambezi Delta has loads of sable. You can see a shooter or more than one every day. Also there are still very good sable in the Hwange/Matetsi/Forestry areas in NW Zimbabwe. Overall compared to the Kafue and the Delta the hunt will cost less in Zim. As you may know I killed a 45" bull in Forestry myself. Contact me anytime if you'd like to discuss some options. Mark MARK H. My friend has a dozen or more African safaris under his belt already and has spent a couple weeks every year in a hunting camp in South Africa for the last 10 years with a PH friend. He definitely knows Africa already, just never hunted a sable. We're looking for a 2 on 1, if possible. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

I will second Bryan Walt's suggestion of Gavin & John at hunters@huntersandguides.co.za I have had a number of clients shoot + 47" Sable with these two PH's. I can think of 2 that were 50".

I would have to recommend Royal kafue and all the references you need are here on AR. My average this year was 44 inch. In addition the Kafue offers a range of species not available elsewhere. ROYAL KAFUE LTD Email - kafueroyal@gmail.com Tel/Whatsapp (00260) 975315144 Instagram - kafueroyal

Yes it depends on what size you are looking for. A 40" sable anywhere in Mozambique is a Monster and probably equivalent to a 45" sable in Zambia and a 43" in Matetsi. If you really want to spend some bucks look at western Tanzania..just look at Aaron's report from Lukwati...I think Aaron was quoted something like "42 inchers running around everywhere".

I don't know how to estimate the length of a sable's horns, but this animal looks magnificent to me. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

I would have to say Zambia has the quantity and the quality for sable. I have yet to see a bad hunt report on Andrew Baldry and his area.

Thierry..I agree...but if cost is a factor what about Peter Johnstone's ranch..Cawston I believe or other ranches in Zim that may still have sable? For instance, yes it has been a while, but I took a nice 44" sable on private land that bordered the Matetsi Concessions in 91'. That ranch was called Kasabi and I have no idea if it is still being hunted.

Safari2, Matetsi still produces good sable, you're right, but seeing as this is potentially the gentlemans last safari, and that sable is what he is after, I'd suggest he starts by looking in the country that on average produces the best quality and quantity of sable. In my opinion that would be Zambia. Cawston has a good population of Sable, but you will struggle to get one over 40". I did a hunt there 2 months ago for sable and saw them everyday. Bow hunters paradise.

Wink said two things that, to me, are very important with regard to the suggestions he is seeking. First, that his friend likely has only one more safari left in him. Second, that he's been on a dozen or more safaris, in addition to spending a couple weeks per year in a safari camp in South Africa. With that in mind, my opinion is that he should book with the one of the best operators he can find, in a great area. Zambia would be a top choice as they have the overall best trophy quality. One place he might consider, given the tender situation in Zambia, would be Pete and Lynn Fisher of Nchila Wildlife Estate. I believe they own their ground privately, and would therefore likely be exempt from losing their area. They are reputed to have some very large sable. And there's always Andrew Baldry/Fairgame of Royal Kafue. BTW, my WAG (Wild Ass Guess) is that the sable he posted up will go about 47". Tough angle to judge, but that bull definitely seems bigger than the 45"er that I shot in Deka. If I were to personally ever hunt another sable, I hope that it'll be somewhere in Zambia, such as Kafue or surrounding regions.

Andrew..do you know when the Zambia GMA's will be awarded? I would hope soon..would not want to be a Zambia operator hitting the Conventions and not know what area(s) I have.

Tomorrow? The top three bidders on all concessions have been called in and there are many well known names that do not occur on that list. ROYAL KAFUE LTD Email - kafueroyal@gmail.com Tel/Whatsapp (00260) 975315144 Instagram - kafueroyal

DLS, Good guess mate. Nchila can offer great Sable. However the Sable you take has already been earmarked by the owner and it is fenced. Personally I would go for free range as you never know what you are going to bump into and you hunt them in big game country. Last year PH Adam Buske took 48.5 off the next door Mushingashi estate. But to be honest a black bull in excess of 40 inches is a very worthy trophy indeed. ROYAL KAFUE LTD Email - kafueroyal@gmail.com Tel/Whatsapp (00260) 975315144 Instagram - kafueroyal

Andrew, From what I saw and know of your Royal Kafue and the Mushingashi Estate I think it is perhaps the only place I'd pass on a 40" bull. Mark MARK H. I would add another vote to the Royal Kafue and Mushingashi area. I wasn’t hunting Sable this year but we saw numerous excellent trophies on the hunt. I am also planning to hunt sable with Andrew in 2013.

I agree, I was there this Sept/Oct and I saw several very big Sables. End of Sept into Oct is a good time to hunt there as the animals are a little more conentrated around the watering areas. They run a good camp and they have some very good PH's, fun guys to hunt with. No drama at the Beria Airport, everybody was nice, no problems with guns, ammo or visas. Even the food a the resturant up stairs was very good. They have great Nyla, eland, big warthogs, bushpigs, and good buffalo as well. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

If a monster sable is your priority you should look to Zambia and Andrew Baldry of Royal Kafue seems to be an excellent choice . The "problem"with Mozambique and for example coutada 11/12 with ZDS or coutada 10 with MARROMEU SAFARIS, is that you will probably finish your sable hunt in the first 2 days of your hunt due to the quantity and quality of sable that you will find there . You will be fine with these operators for sure , just compare prices !!!! Cheers and good luck !

If sable is the only trophy desired, then the question is in what country (s) can you do a quality hunt without a 10 day or more minimum? As mentioned in the thread earlier, if you've got a great sable in the salt by day 2 or 3, do you really need a 10 day hunt?
|

In Zambia you would be looking at game ranches (unfenced) or game farms (fenced). The latter you could do Sable in a day or so. Personally I do think you require a ten day hunt in an unfenced area and as with all hunting you would want to look over a number of animals before you make a decision. Besides free ranging Sable have a habit of free ranging and those truly big bulls can be elusive.
