JK: That rifle is sweet! Is that a Rigby with sideclips? Appears to be a .500 or larger. Dutch

Fabulous nyati! I'd love to shoot one like that some day.

Sidelocks Dutch - might even be detachable but not quite visible in the photo. JKH might give us a better insight on the make and workings of that piece.

now that's a very cool old bull

Dutch is right. Side clips. Nothing to do with the locks. Fences and barrels. Helps keep it on the face. Photo is not clear enough to see for sure if this one has them or not but it does look like it.

Milo: A "Side clip" is something new to me as I have never heard that term used before nor have I known any other person to use it. To the best of my knowledge, DRs come in two versions: Boxlock or Sidelock, ejector and non ejector. Some rifles, the more expensive ones, were created with detachable sidelocks whose base plate houses the spring and related firing mechanism and could be released from their housing to service or repair, without the use of a tool. Some manufacturers would "embellish" their rifles by fitting false side plates to resemble a sidelock, increase the artwork and command a higher than usual price - behind these plates was bugger all other than the wood they rested on. Pray enlighten us (me for sure) as to what exactly a "Side Clip" on a DR is and its functions (if any).

Detachable or fixed? Cannot tell from the photo as the release is normally on the left side.

Hi Fujotupu, Side clips are nothing to do with the locks. They are protrusions on the outer edges of the fences which marry with a segment filed from the barrels and are designed to assist in keeping the barrels on the face. I am sure you can look it up. Anyone with even passing acquaintance of best guns is familiar with the design. Ask Dutch; he obviously knows but he may not be willing to share his knowledge with you after you wrongly corrected him. Humbly suggest you go away and do some research before commenting further. Milo.

what a beautiful old Bull . Talk about character. A trophy like this says so much more than a wide soft bossed animal. If this old warrior could talk he could probably tell a few hairy stories.. Congrats to all involved.

What a great old bull and fine rifle! Fujo, Really? You've never heard the term "side clips" nor have ever "known any other person to use it"? A very common term when speaking of double rifles. Even my lowly Merkel had them. Here is a picture. I'm sure you've seen them before, but possibly just forgot the term? http://www.hallowellco.com/sideclips.htm

Dutch I picked up that beauty about 9 years ago and have never looked back; I sent off the serial numbers to Paul at Rigby but never got a definitive date or info for who the rifle was made for, It’s a very special Double, I have purchased a few doubles in the last few years but nothing comes close to the feel and smoothness of hunting with this Rigby, I have taken close to 30 DG animals with it now and only need a leopard to have completed the big 5 with this specific double, Reg JK

LOL ... I have owned quite a few DRs two of which were in the 450 class (a Rigby and an Army & Navy) both refurbished by Paul when he owned Rigby & J. Roberts & Son - still have a few but damn, none of mine don't have no side clips Maybe DRs rely more on the hook/pin bar and locking bolts to keep them on the face than Side Clips? What I do have with Side Clips though are a couple of 12 Gauge shotguns; a Holland and a lowly Webley & Scott Some people don't realize when they are being taken for a ride and quite happily take the hook, line and sinker! No Todd I ain't never heard of Side Clips and quite frankly, when talking DRs have not heard that term being applied either. JKH - does that 470 have Side Clips and are the locks detachable? Cheers.
