When I’ve seen in the forum the offer from Nyamazana Safaris I’ve decided to try this unique type of hunt and I was right. Very interesting. The raiders left the borders of Hwange national park only at dawn to go to the fields. So we hunted all night and we staied at the camp during the day. Even with the full moon, hunting at night was very difficult and dangerous. This because in the fields the corn was so high that was very difficult to see the elephants, even few meters away. Most of the time we only heard the noise and shooting was impossible. Fortunately, after many unsuccessful stalks, we were able to intercept a group of four bulls as he was crossing a river, returning from their predation, and shooting the biggest. The next morning, all the villagers, including women and children, arrived on the spot to be assigned a portion of the huge beast. The only compensation they get for the tremendous amount of maize that they loose. Thanks a lot to Wayne Van Den Bergh.

I hunted crop raiding elephants at night back in 2003. Although we never found a big bull at night (I shot a 60 pounder a few days later in the afternoon), moving into a group of elephants at night was one of the most exciting ways of hunting, I have ever experienced.

Thanks for sharing the story and the great pics!

Anton, congratulations. They were excited about the tracks of a big leopard in the area.

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......
