Yet another shipping cost question ...

As many know, my dad and I had a very successful safari in Zimbabwe last September where we took two Cape buffalo, two kudu, two impala one warthog and one blue wildebeest.

Finally got the shipping quote from Freight Consultants in Bulawayo to an "airport in NY". Flora and Fauna will be our "broker" here.

Shipping:
$1,343.40 for my dads (1 buf, 1 kudu, 1 impala, 1 warthog, 1 wildebeest).

$1,187.64 for mine (1 buf, 1 kudu, 1 impala).

Does this sound about right to those who have been there and done that before?

That about sounds right. This shipment had wildebeest, zebra, impala, and warthog. Only question is why not have your stuff and your dad's in one crate to save money?

Here is a recent charge and breakdown.

Thanks for the responses everyone.

To address the question of shipping them in a single crate - i was told because the original paper work had him taking some and I taking some of the game, they can't be shipped as a single shipment. The crates have to document the "taker".

I guess better to just go with it given the proces seem about right than to argue and risk losing the trophies.

For Importing here into the states that isn't true, you CAN have both Safaris in on crate as long as the papers for each hunter accompanies the crate. Whomever is shipping the crates don't know what they are talking about. We get combined shipments all the time.

I second what Jeff said about combining the shipments. It is often quoted as a requirement by the US, which could be further from the truth. My buddies and I have used combined shipments from SA and Zim with no problem. More often than not I have had to prod the taxidermist and or shipping agent but in the end all was well and costs were less and split amongst two.

I think I have used "combined" shipments everytime I've hunted Africa when with another person or three. Jerry is right on. You should check this out further before giving in to the shipper. Most likely more beneficial to them without regards to what is best for YOU?

That seems high to me. I would expect that to be about right for the total including Flora and Fauna's brokerage fees but you are probably stuck paying it.

Tell that story to John or Matt at F&F. They will advise you. The export shippers use that same lame line everytime they can get away with it. As Jerry stated, you can ship 10 hunters trophies in one crate as long as each hunter has his own paperwork. I bet you and your Father paid for export permits....tell them to do as asked not as they wish.

Guys,

I think you'll find it's more complicated that at first appears. I certainly don't doubt Jerry when he says the US allows import of shared crates but I think you'll find that some African countries don't allow the export of shared crates.

The reason for that requirement is largely that they want to ensure they know who to blame should any individual try to export an unlicenced trophy etc and if it's a shared crate, it's harder for them to discover and prove who's to blame.

Incidentally, there's always (understandably) a fair bit of debate on shipping and clearance costs etc but you should be aware that one factor is that the US have different pricing structures depending on port of entry....... Frankly, I was unaware of that until I watched a DVD we've just started selling here: http://www.shakariconnection.c...ng-trophies-dvd.html and it's one of the many subjects covered in that...... it's a great DVD BTW and even though I've been in the business for 30 years, even I learned a thing or two from it.

I just got my bill today. Capes and skulls have arrived at International Freight Systems, Seattle, and are in transit UPS to Atcheson's in Butte, Mt.
Total bill is $1969.08---------and don't forget the 8 cents!!!!

What came across the pond from Maun, Botswana to Joberg to Atlanta to Seattle to Butte was

in a damn big crate along with Wilson the volleyball

Apparently it was sidetracked to Atlanta because of the pig. Hmmmmmmmm I was sidetracked in Atlanta once because of a pig.

My most recent shipments from Africa had to be shipped separate from my partners. One shipment was from Tanzania '06 and the other was from Namibia '09. I was told that F&W can get better prosecutions with only one persons items in a crate. Before my '06 hunt I had done three other shipments, together with my hunting partner.

My son and I got our shipment back about 2 wks. ago. We had it shipped together. We had the taxidermy done at highveld, in RSA. The crate held:
2 zebra skin rugs
7 tanned back skins
11 euro plaque mts.
1 kudu shoulder mt.

Shipping was done by OXI logistics, Pretoria.
Clearing was done in Chicago by D&L CBH
All in, including air freight, and shipping to my home was $1605. My half, $802 and change. I was VERY happy.

Total 1892 per hunter shipped to tannery.

In looking at my air bill I notice that gross weight for the two crates equals 107.5 kg's, or 230 olbs. freight for that weight on Swiss Air is $1,357.00.

Other charges equaled $495.42. Those charges were DBC: $20.00; AWA: $10.00; LGC: $143.00; SCC #18.28; MYC: $69.88 and TXC: $244.26. Anyone hazard a guess as to what the above charges were for? With a $10.00 rebate they came to $495.42. Don't know why a $10.00 rebate.

So far I have $3700 into my seven skulls and backskins via Bulawayo/Dallas in two crates at 409 lbs. Still to come is ground freight/insurance so I am certain to have just in excess of $4,000 in the seven animals before tanning/taxidermy and SOMEONE said hunting Africa was much cheaper than North America - yeah right!

Can't wait to DO IT AGAIN!!
