Buying a Rem XP100r. I'm leaning away from a traditional pistol scope and thinking of using a red dot type aiming device. Any advice? I've never owned one. Whatever I get I want it to be extremely rugged.
My experience is in bright day light you have to turn the dot up so bright that it is large and covers a lot of the target.Range and size of target becomes a factor. I would suggest finding someone who has one on any platform and check out day light and low light sight pictures.

Tried a dot on a 10" 30-30 barrel and could not live with the lack of definition. Since most red dots don't have any magnification, you will be limiting the distance of your shots. Leupold makes a dot that does have magnification but only about 2 power. In either case, if you'll be shooting not much over 75 yards it may be ok if you get the small dot, say 2 MOA. anything bigger than that will cover the target. My XPR (in 260) wears a 3.5 to 8 variable. Just the ticket for stand hunting white tails.
Thanks for the replies. I've now decided on a 2.5x8 variable scope. I looked at some red dot sights and I see what you mean about the dot covering too much area and the brightness in sunlight. I found a "new in the box" XP100r on the web. I wanted one back in 1998-99 but didn't get one. Now I have one!
