XP100R sight?
Buying a Rem XP100r. I'm leaning away from a traditional pistol scope and thinking of using a red dot type aiming device. Any advice? I've never owned one. Whatever I get I want it to be extremely rugged.

What calibre, what use and range, and what level of accuacy will you accept?

The caliber is .223 Rem and the XP100R will be used for everything from paper punching, plinking, to coyote hunting.

My experience is in bright day light you have to turn the dot up so bright that it is large and covers a lot of the target.Range and size of target becomes a factor. I would suggest finding someone who has one on any platform and check out day light and low light sight pictures.

Tried a dot on a 10" 30-30 barrel and could not live with the lack of definition. Since most red dots don't have any magnification, you will be limiting the distance of your shots. Leupold makes a dot that does have magnification but only about 2 power. In either case, if you'll be shooting not much over 75 yards it may be ok if you get the small dot, say 2 MOA. anything bigger than that will cover the target.
My XPR (in 260) wears a 3.5 to 8 variable. Just the ticket for stand hunting white tails.

Thanks for the replies. I've now decided on a 2.5x8 variable scope. I looked at some red dot sights and I see what you mean about the dot covering too much area and the brightness in sunlight. I found a "new in the box" XP100r on the web. I wanted one back in 1998-99 but didn't get one. Now I have one!
