I'll be mounting it on a contender 15" 222Rem bull barrel. I have a Leupold Duel Dovetail mount on it but I only have med high rings. Will the high rings work or do I need to get super high?
Jules, I finally got to shoot my 222 with the 8x24 Tasco, last week. I had to go with high rings on the 40MM scope, so you will probably have to go with extra high. I didn't get a black eye, but I did develop a flinch after about 15 rounds. The scope was brushing my nose or forehead each time I touched off a round and I was getting worried that sooner or later, it would draw blood. This was after I added 8 ounces of lead to the forearm. When I tried a tight grip, the scope didnt hit me, but the accuracy went all to hell. It seems that my Contender likes a very light grip. It sure was nice to be able to see the target with the higher power scope. Maybe I can find a rifle scope with more eye relief, or add more weight to keep it out of my face. The quest for a one hole group goes on!

Here's a picture of the lead that I added to the forearm. I drilled 3/4" holes in the barrel channel, then I drilled more holes in a scrap piece of wood to use as a mold to cast the weights. The slugs were about 5/8" long. I held them in with blue silicon RTV. The weight really holds it on the sandbags, but it's a little much to carry on a hunt.

Nashcat,
Do you find such a heavy forend loosens the dovetail locks on your barrel?
In my forend expiramentations, I have found that there is a point of diminishing returns on the heavier recoiling calibers as far as weighted forends go, but have not established a particular limit on the milder recoiling calibers, and on the rimfires anything seems to go

Sean, I didn't notice any change in the dovetail locks after using the weighted forend. I fired about 40 rounds of 222 with it and then tried it with my 35 Rem barrel. I fired 50 hot rounds through the 35, and couldn't see any change in the locks. The extra weight did seem to calm the recoil with the 35. Also, the point of impact was 6" lower at 100 yds, with the added weight, than without it. I guess it cut down on muzzle flip while the bullet was still in the bore.

Jules, you've got mail. I measured the largest part of the Objective Bell (the knurling on the AO), and it measures 2.240". I have my Simmons 800116 on a Ruger K77/22VBZ, and had to get the highest Rings Ruger offers to get it to clear the barrel.

Thanks Larry, That's what I needed to know. Looks like the super high rings will work.
