After e-mailing BATF and getting "we do not respond to questions involving technical and legal issues via e-mail. I suggest you contact our Firearms Technology Branch on 202-927-7910 for assistance." I called them. The deputy division chief for Firearms Technology, Doug Craize (not sure that's spelled correct), told me that they have no way of telling how a frame started life without contacting the manufacturer. They have no list of which frame is a rifle and which is a pistol when it comes to T/C's. And because they are all identical they would have to have another reason to even ask TC the question (i.e. they couldn't make the real reason they were at your house stick so they're looking for a weapons charge). HOWEVER, if the only parts you own could only be assembled into a short barreled rifle you are in violation. So make sure you own a long barrel if you own a shoulder stock and a frame, and don't put the short barrel on the frame until the pistol grip is on the frame. I contacted Tim at T/C and he said if you supplied him with the serial number of a frame, he could research it and let you know how it left the factory.
So for the paranoid out there that think the BATF might come knocking on their door, contact T/C and see if you have any rifle frames and make sure they stay that way. For the rest of us, just don't give the BATF a reason to ask the question.
MSSmagnum and GonHuntin - I humbly admit my error in challenging you . However I talked to the local ATF agent (ex-girlfriend of my best friend) and BATF is NOT using this as a primary violation, they lost the first Supreme Court case on T/C's and don't want to lose any more ground on the GCA and NFA by elevating this. Would you look at that! Mssmagnum and Gonhuntin have the same opinion of a 270!! Who would ever have thunk it. Makes you feel warm and fuzzy all over to see them agreeing on something now doesn't it.

Come on GH, Okies do have a use for Yankees (and Kalifornians), at least when things aren't going well, we can always look at them and see how much worse off we really could be .
