MacifejBEST SEMI-AUTO OFFENSE SHOTGUN??
The term Defense is too limiting.

Looking to update my semi-auto shotgun equipment. Owned an M1 Super 90 for years and looking for something equivalent or better. 12GA or possibly 10GA. What's out there now?
11 March 2011, 08:46
MacifejInteresting but not semi-auto.

arkypeteI'm not particular but the Winchester Super X model 3 may be worth a look..

Then you'd have to shorten the mag tube. Needs the buttstock from the Tac model & dump the blue finish.

PeterWill it work for ruffed grouse? Don't want to show up with the "wrong" gun.

crbutlerIf you want a true "offensive" shotgun, get a Saiga 12 ga. and send it to Robert Wright at R&R Racing. They are pretty reliable after his work and loading 20 round box magazines of 12 Ga ammo is pretty offensive.
It would probably not be allowed in some of the more "defensive" minded gun sports, but if you want to blast pigeons out of a silo, its waaay fun.

sam308I have a Benelli M4. It replaced an M1 super 90. Has several upgrades and is, of course, up to Benelli standards. Would be a great choice. They are a little pricey, however.

Been trying to get on the Benelli website for a few days. Lookslike it might have been hacked or something. No go. I'd buy another Benelli, the M1 was flawless.

PeterMacifej, the latest CDNN catalog shows the FN SLP ( not the competition version). You have to call for the price. I will try to do that tomorrow.
Seems like it might be a good gun if the price is right!
They also have a HUGLU in a more conventional semi auto look, but with a 20" barrel.
Peter.

The Britosh Army in the Malaya Emergency and the South African Police can't be wrong...but ther are maybe better choices now?
Here in UK about thirty years ago a lot of the ammunition for these was sold off. The cartridges were paper but with an ALUMINIUM outer skin.
And from memory "Special SG" buckshot. Which is just below one aught buckshot in size. Eleven 7.6mm shot to the one ounce.

larrysI did my own. Just get a good quality Rem 1100 and add all the goodies you want. I used it for IPSC 3-gun competition years ago. Had it backbored, ported and added the extension tube. Very accurate with slugs. I don't mind that it is 2-3/4" only. No biggie. Replacement parts are readily available unlike some of the others, although I have never needed any.

mstarlingI really like the Benellis! Hard to beat.
Is perhaps better to get a really good pump gun than an "iffy" auto. With limited finances the Mossberg 590 20" 8 shot pump gun is hard to beat.

The greatest limitation to using a shotgun as a serious
modern day offensive weapon is the time it takes to reload the tubular magazine. The Saiga uses box magazines. Magazines available are 2 round, 5 round, 8 round, 10 round, 12 round, and a 20 round drum. There is even a "California legal" 10 round drum available.

DieseltruckerMy uncle has the Benelli M2, which has never failed in our beaver hunting adventures, and i like the feel of the gun, it balances and points well. #4 buck is what he runs in it and it is mighty good medicine for those rodents.

Larry,
Have you ever had any jamming issues?
I guess having it backbored took care of that?

SFRanger7GPFor most people and most situations, any shotgun will do. However, if you are going to shoot a lot and run it under less than ideal conditions, the Benelli autos are the only ones I have ever seen that are reliable. My next choice would be a Rem 870.

Idaho SharpshooterI managed to squeak thru another 3-gun season with my decrepit (like me) old A5 with zero issues. About five cases of my reloads, slugs and buckshot between practice and matches.

mlfgunsBenelli has been the standard for over twenty years. I have an M1 super 90 and it never let me down. Any of their models would make an exceptional tool. Just get professional training and practice.
Any exhibition shooter can make any shotgun dance it doesn't mean it is the best. It is the man or woman behind the gun that makes the biggest difference. You can't buy skill.
There are a lot of good quality shotguns out there. Get what you like. If you can afford it and your life depends on it have it tweaked by a quality "Shotgun" gunsmith. Stay safe.
