Both are good airlines, Air NZ perhaps a better service all round. Not wanting to decry any airline but Qantas has had quite a few instances of mechanical problems lately and of course the well publicised explosion of a Rolls Royce Trent engine on one of their Airbus aircraft. Quantas did not handle this as well as they could, grounding all Airbus's, restarting flights when they thought they had found the problem, and then grounding again when they found the true cause of the engine failure. This did not inspire confidence in Qantas especially with the rash of other problems they were having at the time.

I would rather risk an engine blowing up on Qantas than have to spend 12 hours with Air New Zealand flight crew Wink

Eagle, I thought you were going to trot out the case of the hostie who had it off with a passenger in a toilet and then went and sat on another one's face.

But if you want a bit of room to stretch out, go when there's a big worry on. During the SARS scare and Iraq troubles of 2003 I found vacant banks of seats very easy to find while coming back from Europe.

No but I was thinking of the recent Air NZ advert pulled from TV involving a gay member of the cabin crew and the one of the All Blacks.

I'm a very happy AirNz customer and I'd recommend them over Qantas any day. I just used them Jhb/Perth/Auckl/Chc return and the service was good.

Averaging at least 1 international flight a year since the early 1980's with Air NZ I have never had a bad experience.

My Australian friends fly Air NZ when they visit the States. They, and I, fly business class and have always had a great experience. Never done Quantas except for domestic flights in Australia, which were farmed out to a charter company. I would rather fly Air NZ than British Airlines to London, that is for sure!

I guess if they like getting off the plane and then reboarding in Auckland!! Dont think there are driect Air NZ flights to USA from AU. pls correct me if Im wrong. If I was just going to NZ I would sure look at Air NZ but if AU itinery is included I would consider both.

Qantas on the A380. And make sure you get the A380 flight when booking.

Eagle,
EVERY airline has mechanical problems, not just Qantas, just Qantas's items are highlighted by the press in Aust. And besides, if I am on an aircraft and it has a problem, I would want to be on a Qantas aircraft because at least the people up the front know what TF to do to get it on the ground safely !!! unlike some other airlines.

I have flown both and both are good, although once Air NZ flight was quite late departing.

I think ANZ is part of Star Alliance while Quantas is part of One World. So if you are gold are higher, you basically get a free ticket with your miles bonus. Plus, if you are Gold or higher on Star Alliance (as well as Sky Team) you get free access to the club if you flying on that airline. On our last trip to NZ we used the club to take a shower just before boarding; that was wonderful.
