What is a good hotel in Darwin on the Esplanade across from Bicentennial Park? Thanks. Mike

We stayed at the Double Tree by Hilton Esplanade Darwin and the Palms City Resort. Both are located directly across from Bicentennial Park. The Double Tree is a very nice hotel. The Palms City Resort has small bungalows which I enjoyed.

Mike, We went on booking.com and chose the Mantra on the Esplanade. Sadie is pretty thorough in researching our accommodations while traveling and this seemed to be the best bang for the buck in the right location. Mark MARK H. Thanks for the feedback. Mark, have you stayed at Mantra or planning to stay there? Definitely looks like a hotel on the Esplanade is the way to go in terms of view, the park, access to restaurants and pubs, etc. Mike

Mike, yes, the Esplanade area is the central axis area of Darwin. Mitchell Street, which is a block away, is the active area with many bars and restaurants. We ate at Hanuman once and Monsoons twice. My hunting partner and I really liked Monsoons as the steak and barramundi were excellent. Enjoy Darwin. I have been fortunate in traveling quite a few places, and Darwin may be my favorite city.

I stayed at the Novotel Hotel near the airport. Book on line a lot cheaper. Not 5 Star but clean and nice.

Let me know what you think. We will be there in August.

Mike, A few mates stayed at the Mantra a few seasons ago and were happy with it. I don't think you can go wrong with most of the big hotels in town or at the airport

Argus is another one but its not water side. best to just look at best deal within that part of town which is all close by anyway.

We have booked at the DoubleTree Esplanade. The hotel just completed a major renovation of all the rooms and common areas so it should be nice. I will report back in June on my impressions. Mike

My wife and I are hunting with Barry from 14-21 Aug. He's picking us up in Gove on the 14th and dropping us off in Darwin on the 21st. We've booked the Palms Hotel 21-22 Aug. Who's Berry taking back to Gove on the 14th? We'll be passing each other.

When I left Darwin that was just finished being built and by all accounts it was a nice place. Make sure you check out Croc cove. Right in the middle of Darwin city. ------------------------------ A mate of mine has just told me he's shagging his girlfriend and her twin. I said "How can you tell them apart?" He said "Her brother's got a moustache!"

Novotel at the airport is good, and has great Chinese food. It is just across the street from the other airport hotel, which also has excellent food. Hilton in Mitchell Street is pretty nice. Haven’t stayed at the Waterfront yet but there are heaps of good food options. A visit to the Aviation Museum is worthwhile. The other museum is interesting, too.

As stated above, we're hunting with Barry in Aug. Have talked to him once via Whatsapp and some emails and texts. From reports here and and our direct contact with him sounds like we're going to have a great time. Would like to know if anyone here who hunted with him last year or before we go this Aug would be willing to talk on the phone to give us better idea of what the camp is like and hunting conditions etc are like. We're just cull hunting and using his rifles. Wife is a hunter, but only "camping" experiences have been in our self contained truck camper and Namibian hunting lodges. Mostly want her to be able to get a better feel for what to expect. She's looking forward to going regardless. If anyone willing to talk, send me a PM and a good day and time to call. Thanks in advance.

Looks like Barry has a full dance card. I’m hunting August 8-14. The wife is going beforehand and we’ll spend some time seeing sights around Brisbane - so I’ll be hiring a rifle (bummer). Looking forward to it.

I asked him about bringing my girlfreind to camp and he said it was unsuitable. I'm guessing its pretty basic and no frills. Then I asked about bringing my boy who I just took to Africa and he said that would be fine just have to make arrangements. I would ask Barry specifically. I am going in August first time

Ended up spending about a week all tolled in Darwin. The Mantra was perfect IMO. Clean, good service and the restaurant ain't bad either. Close by some excellent eateries that not all the tourists mob. Rented an apartment in the hotel that had bedroom, living room, kitchen and bath with laundry for a very reasonable price. Laundry facilities wear welcome to clean up between the hunt and fishing trip. Interesting about the comments on Barry's camp. Sadie was very comfortable on our buffalo hunt with Graham Williams. Private tents with good cots, hot showers, better food than I expected plus a whisky/wine selection like I've never seen in any camp. We had zero complaints. Mark MARK H. Good to hear there were no bed lice in the Darwin hotels. Always a worrisome threat when traveling abroad these days. All The Best ...

Seriously? I have never been the recipient of bed bugs in OZ or anywhere else, but if I get them in August while in Darwin I will be sure to warn you not to go.

Dude, focus. Unless you live on Mary-Poppins Lane, lice and bugs be everywhere in 2d and 3rd world countries. It's just a fact of life when you travel. You can do some things to mitigate catching shit, but mostly you're at risk. Cleanliness standards abroad simply aren't in the same universe as what they are in the USA. All The Best ...

Your Kidding right? Australia a 2nd/3rd world country? "Cleanliness standards abroad simply aren't in the same universe as what they are in the USA" Yeah.....right. https://www.news.com.au/travel...68a701cb58b94c312a08 ------------------------------ A mate of mine has just told me he's shagging his girlfriend and her twin. A.J. You've obviously traveled little or you look for trouble if you've encountered bed bugs and lice in places you stayed. Also Australia is as much a 1st world country as is the USA. Ever been there? Mark MARK H. I live six hours from Darwin and have stayed in a dozen different places there for work or travel over the last fifteen years. All very much First World. There are some awesome places to eat and drink in Darwin.

AJ You are crazy if you think Oz is a second or third world country!!! It’s is one of the most modern and civilised first world countries in the world. You need to get out of wherever you are see for yourself. It’s obvious you don’t travel much at all..........
|
One of Us |
I have travelled quite a bit actually, but I never said (or meant) Australia was a itself 2d/3rd World country; however I see now my point should've been worded differently, ... ... which was that the aforesaid bugs, lice, and other 'cooties' are often transported into the hotels of countries like Australia or N.Z. by foreigners (non-Aussies) traveling there or through it from 2d/3rd world countries. As far as Australia per se goes, despite screwy internal politics and a lack of proper immigration controls, you are correct. It's not descended below 1st World status, although Aussies would be prudent to keep a public eye on the effect which the migration of 2d & 3rd Worlders into the country has on their present living standards. All The Best ...
