im talking with hunt aust right now and im seriously planning on booking a 10 day cull hunt

my big question is what rifles....

i have a blaser r93 375 h&h with safarie weight barrel i could use this on the larger harder to kill animals so i only have to make 1 shot then on to the next.

the problem i have is the second rifle......im thinking a 300 win mag with 180 grain woodleighs

what do you guys think of a ruger number 1 for this work.

so what would you guys use........i dont wanna have to shoot every thing to times cause the caliber is to small i wanna make sure i staple the animals to the ground.

Aside from the occasional Pig there are no hard to kill animals in New Zealand. Depending on the amount of shooting you will do an '06 or similiar will work fine.

Accurate and low recoil.

Ruger no1 would be hopeless, too slow you need a good bolt action, with a 5 shot mag is ideal.

How many animals are you looing at shooting?? per day

Recoil may be an problem as you could firing over a 100 rounds per day.

Some of the Australia memebers will know more, but i found 300gr 375H&H woodleigh bullets too hard when shooting donkeys, the bullet just didn't open up,this was my buffalo load and worked great on buffalo and pigs.

270 upwards for everything other than buffalo would do the job.

Why would you buy another gun when you have one of the most versatile guns on the market? I have the same gun and bought a standard weight forend and 300WSM srandard weight barrel for mine. Just a suggestion.

i use a .308 bolt and a marlin 30 30 both with 150g win power points pointed for the 308 and fn for the 30 30 works great.
if your blasting donkeys they can be tough but the numbers you can shoot will soon make a hard kicker tiring to the shoulder.
p.s. some of th guys use a detachable mag bolt so they can get more shots in quickly.
supose it depends on the numbers you want to bowl over?

700 - what species will you target? If you plan on shooting donkeys and pigs I'd suggest a 308 or 30/06 bolt gun would do just fine. Then again, if you don't mind the recoil and expense of going through plenty of 375H&H ammo, just stick with the blaser 375.

The theme of these shoots tends to be quantity, rather than quality, especially if you target donkeys. If your on a productive block, its quite possible, as Top Predator stated, for you to go through well over +100 shots per day. For this type of work, I'd just about be happy to abuse the outfitters rifles!!

Not sure what or where you will be shooting but where I was the cull hunts were primarily horses. My PH recommended a 243. The shots were close and head shots were the most reasonable. IMO your main emphasis should be on accuracy. A poor hit with a 375/300mag will not anchor any faster than a spot-on 243 placement.

Also, if you are flying you can carry a lot more small caliber bullets and still stay within the ammo weight limits. A 10 day cull hunt will require a LOT of bullets.

I have been on a couple of culls and used a .30/06 and .308Win on Donkeys (Winchester M70, 30/06 & Savage 99,.308Win)) in the NT with no problems. I would not go under a 308 for Donkeys as for Camels a .338 would be good. I have seen 338 and 375H&H used on donkeys but if shooting dozens at a time and quickly the 30/06 is what I use

You could take your .375 H&H and load some 235 gr woodleigh softs in it.

I would also like a heavy barreled gun of some sort..................say a .30 cal (I have a .300 rum heavy barreled rifle) but I reckon your .375 H&H with a Ruger VT in .308 with a leupold 6-18 and loaded with some Nosler 150 gr BT's would bea great RUGGED heavy barreled culling rifle.

700 Nitro,
I have enjoyed Hunt Aust. cull hunts 4 times and will be again with them this Aug. Bring a 308 or 30-06 bolt gun. Matt Graham stocks ammo in both cartridges in camp. All ammo will be Federal 150 gr. Shooting 200 rds. per day is not unusual. A 10 day cull shoot is more than most can handle. We are usually shot out by the 5th day.

The 308 and 30-06 work well on donks, brumbies, and camels. Bring a couple of boxes of 200-220 gr. ammo for the camels. In the past, Hunt Au. charged $100 per camel due to popular demand. Shooting a bunch can get expensive quite rapidly.

Since you are planning a 10 day hunt, I suggest that you look into their buffalo trophy hunt either prior or after the normal 5 day cull shoot. Then you bring your 375 along with a 308 or 30-06.

Please be aware that the camels and buff are not necessarily in the same area as the donks, brumbies and pigs.

Matt Graham will be in Reno for the SCI next week. It may be worth your while to attend and get the straight scoop from Matt.

i have been talking to him already.......i have no interest in hunting buffalo.....

im looking a buying a 30-06 ruger m77 stainless steel laminate with a lepould scope.

if thats the case with the camels i will probably shoot 4 or 5 and bring the skulls home.

the 375 h&h will be brought just for fun and baiscly for the camels the 300 win or 30-06 will do every thing else.

If your finances will stretch to it, I would buy a Steyr Scout or SSG and get the 10 round magazine option and several spare magazines. I'd go for the 308 Win as it is easy on the shoulder and you can buy quality ammo here. the 5kg you can carry on the airline may not go far enough.

BTW if you're passing through Sydney maybe we could meet up for a beer or two.

mike

Here in Argentina we hunt in similar ways to Australia ,so i supouse my opinion can be useful i use a cz with military fmijs to cull everything because is cheap ammo and the rifle is very strong im also left handed but i can repit shots very fast ,the remigton patrol rifle 308 can be another option its pump action so it can be useful .Juan

.30/06 will be plenty based on my experience . Use a good quality projectile like the 180gn Accubond . Donkeys take some killing . On a cull hunt you will be expected to take down more than one from each family group (you tend to find them in groups of 5 - 10 animals) . You will find that you will be taking shots from less than optimum angles at running game after the first shot has been fired .
I used a 140gn Accubond from a 7mm WSM with good success but would go to 160gn or perhaps a Barnes TSX for a little more penetration if doing it again . Most times the 140gn didn't exit .

thats why if i have to ill use the 375 h&h i dont wanna be using something just marginaly adiquate i wanna make sure i kill all of them and with 300 grain wooleigh round noses at 2500 fps im sure they gett all the killing they will ever need.

ill use the 30-06 on easy to kill stuff. and as a rule i never use bullets lighter than 180 in a 06....exp when after deer or bigger sized game.

im just starting to get into the small bores like the 30 cal over the last 4-5 years the smallest gun i owend was the 375 h&h i used it for every thing.

thanks for all the responses and keep em coming......like i said if any one here wants to join me id be more than glad to have ya.

700 nitro,
Mate don't try to over complicate things by dragging around two rifles. If your not going after buff then leave your 375 at home. The 30-06 will kill everything you'll be after. Donkeys are tough BUT they're not bullet proof. I use my 6.5x55 on them and it does just fine. If your going on a cull hunt then blazing away with a 30-06 has to be easier on the pocket than using the 375. Having said all that, its totally your choise. If you want to bring them both, go for it cheers

greghud ,
That scope is a 4.5 - 14 x 40AO Leupold Vari X111 . The same rifle now has a Meopta Meostar 3 - 10 x 50 which is probably better suited .
Knocked over a walking goat at 427 paces with it the other day . 10 X seemed to be plenty of magnification .

Bakes ,
I'm with you on the .30/06 . Reckon it would be near perfect for donkeys and pigs with the right projectile . In the 7mm WSM I just thought in future I'd probably be better with a heavier projectile at lower speed for slightly better penetration on rear end shots . The 140 Accubond dumped them like a bag of sh1t with lung shots .

Just curious what is done with these cull animals that are shot. Are they taken and sold for pet food or something like that or are they just left to rot?

Don't get me wrong if they are just left to rot I do not have a problem with that as I realize that they are exotics that need to be thinned. I am just curious.

desided the 300 win mag would be better it offers me a bit more snot exp when using 200 grain round nose bullets for the tougher stuff.

and offers a bit flatter shooting when using my prefered primuim 165-180 grain bullets.

Take plenty of ammo or organise lots to be on hand when you get there.

is the 30-30 to small for this job with good 150-170 grain bullets.

im looking at having a custom made rifle done with 10 round mags but a 30-30 that hold 6-7 round would work great

30/30 is popular for pigs at closer ranges (150 metres or so). Doubt that you'll be doing so much shooting that you will damage the barrel if sensible . Same with the .300 magnum . Use some common sense and you'll be OK .
Didn't hurt my 7mm WSM .

30 rapid fire shots out of a 300WM will have it smoking hot - destroys barrels, melts synthetic stocks, quite unpleasant really - not to mention what it does to accuracy while you are shooting. When we get onto a big mob of donkeys we want to put them all down and not let any get away to become vehicle shy. On average (over a week or a season) we take three shots per animal to dispatch them (D.E.A.D. - never going past a moving animal) so you can see how you might use 100-200 rounds per day if you get onto some big mobs. That might seem like a lot of rounds per animal but we dont exactly have time to sit around waiting for them to bleed-out
(the chest shot ones) and those donkeys and horses sure take some dying. Also it isnt always possible to get good head-shots on moving animals.

The 308's and 30-06's seem to do the best job but the 270 with premium projectiles and an accurate rifle would do the trick too.

Cheers all
Matt

If you aren't going to use your already servicable (and IMHO a good choice) 375 H&H Blaser, I'd go with what Matt has recommended. Especially the 308.
