I first met Phil M about 15 years ago and he is a top line sambar man and has got some super stag heads, well now his boy Taylor is carrying on the tradition as evidenced by this thumper taken on the 29/3/08 in sambar country....nothing else compares to big wild sambar stags in this country as our premier game animal. Here you go courtesy of ODeer,Taylor`s spelling too. . Well 4 weeks ago dad spotted an antler in the bino and that all we could see and as i snuck closer the wind was wrong and he nicked off. No sign nothing but we knew we had to get back up there. so on the weekend left thurday night and hunted friday and saw NOTHING not ever Shite so were pretty bummed but that deer hunting for ya, so the next day we hunted 3km away and was great country perfect level and wind was perfect. I was 30m above dad and in fro\nt of him and we come to a big clearing bout 100 below us and we just stood looking and i saw what looked to be a wallow and i rasied the gun to look and dad jumped but i just shook my head and he looked in his bino and shook his head to say it wasnt a wallow just a soak with water i was just about to keep going when i thought somthing moved i looked and SHITE was a deer i raised the scope and he was just coming out of the trees near the soak towards me bout 150m down i dropped to my arse then realised i could lay down so safey off and give it to him right between the sholders on the spine. He dropped but back to his feet turned left and running and i give him another just missing his front right leg, would of taked aboher but i was aiming over dads head so i ran to him and got the scope on him just has he dropped off the clearing. It was a clearing but bit trees everywhere and this is why dad never saw him till he got running and he only just saw him and he dropped off the side of the clearing, so we waited couple of minutes and heading down. As we got to the edge found blood and i waited with it then 20 ahead more athen more and more dad said just cover me he might just be sitting, get ready to flatten him, then he turn around shook my hand and began yelling there was one big antler out of the ground and he ran to it and said if he had another like this! as the stag had fallen and his antler was wedged under him but we got it out and few shouts and boy was i amazed!!!! when i first saw it i thought it was a doe then i saw antlers 20" so i fired but at 150m they look a bit smaller. Got alot of photos, was shown how to cape him then 1 hour walk back to camp. Sent few picture messages to mates and back home and then packed up and came home sunday calling in in couple of mates and getting him roughly scored and 204 DS... was i happy as hell to hear that!!! Used Winchester 270, 165g nozler potioners. Posts: 87 | Location: Victoria Australia | Registered: 07 September 2002 | |||

I'm no sambar expert but have seen enough pictures to know that is a great trophy . Well done . The hunting imperative was part of every man's soul; some denied or suppressed it, others diverted it into less blatantly violent avenues of expression, wielding clubs on the golf course or racquets on the court, substituting a little white ball for the prey of flesh and blood.
