So I'll be hunting with the Telfords in May. Staying a few extra days and renting a car. Any suggestions on how to kill a few days on the South Island?

MsAAZW and I did that. First thing we did was hire a helicopter to drop us off in a park. Flew in 25 miles and he dropped us off above timberline. We watched glaciers calve off into the lake. We then spent two days hiking out. Brought along a rifle and fishing rod, but didn't shoot or catch anything.

We then drove on the north side of the south island along the coast. Did some day hikes and slept in a few campgrounds. Had a great time.

The Kiwis know more about their home than I do !!

I would suggest not trying to fit too much into your five days, and perhaps leave the North Island for another time. Plenty to see and do in the South Island for five days.

If you want, you can always change your mind later and go north - it's pretty easy.

Talk to Gerald & Sue Telford - they will give you great advise!

All depends on what you want to do / achieve.

Plenty of amazing wilderness to see over 5 days. You can do the various glaciers, lakes etc. You could do Fiordland - world heritage site.

Or you could just hang around Queenstown and enjoy the Central Otago wines!

You could spend a couple of days in Dunedin & then Christchurch.

You could drive up to the Kaikoura coast & watch whales & do some great fishing. Do not forget to try our crayfish!

If you are going to be there in May you could ask Gerald to take you duck shooting for a day.

Bungy jumping?

Gold mining?

High volume rabbit shooting?

You could find amazing Canada goose shooting over decoys - no limit

There is heaps to do and see in the South Island. Been there about five or six times. Two weeks last October. Couple of days in Queenstown is mandatory. Cruise the lake on the Earnslaw. Te Anau and Boat trip on Doubtful or Milford Sound. Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers. Train trip from Christchurch to the West coast is one of the top ten train rides in the World, especially when there is plenty of snow.
Hot lap in a Lamborghini at the racetrack in Cromwell was bloody awesome. Great motor museum too.
Lunch at the Cardrona pub near Wanaka if you get the chance.
You won't fit that lot into 5 days and you'll want to go back for more.

The hunting imperative was part of every man's soul; some denied or suppressed it, others diverted it into less blatantly violent avenues of expression, wielding clubs on the golf course or racquets on the court, substituting a little white ball for the prey of flesh and blood.

Bobby:

There is a guide named Mark Dewsbery of Alpine Adventures NZ. He did an outstanding job of arranging various things for us when we were there last year. I would highly recommend contacting him.

alpineadventuresnz@gmail.com

I will relate two of the many things we did.

1- He drove us about a hour out of Queenstown to a park. We hiked from the parking area to the Rob Roy Glacier. It was a serious hike and very spectacular. We loved every minute of it. We must have seen 50-100 waterfalls on the way.

2- Mark flew us in a small plane to somewhere on the coast. We landed on a grass runway. There was not another person around. We hiked about 3 miles through the bush and came out on the Tasman Sea. There was a massive colony of seals there. Further up the island was a colony of penguins.

I would also recommend staying a few days in Queenstown.
