Hi, I'm planning to buy a new rifle in a small caliber, but I'm undecided between a Savage, a Tikka or....; what are your opinions? Thanks.

Wildboar, I would think that if the cost is approximately the same the Tikka might well satisfy to a greater extent all else being equal.

Savage, in a landslide...6oz new accu-trigger, single shot platform, option of a right bolt-left port setup, 1:9" twist...no close second. Mine will stay right at an inch at 300yds with the Nosler Competition bullets.

I'm partial to the savage for money spent vs accuracy. Not much to headspace and swap your own barrels, and its easy to tune the accu trigger down to where you like it for pull. The laminate stocks are much preferred for accuracy and just a simple "skim coat" bedding job to level around the pillars and behind the recoil lug is all needed. A very shooter friendly rifle with easy bolt head swaps and available machined recoil lugs.

Any of the varmint or tactical rifles will usually shoot 1/2" or better with handloads....even with the factory barrel. Some shoot much better!

Savage makes the model 12 with left port right bolt in 1 in 9" twist and 1 in 7" twist. I would go with the 1 in 7" twist to shoot 80gr. sierra's with 25grs.Varget and federal 205m primers. This is very comparable to shooting a 308Win. with 155 Sierra's.I have used this load out to 1000yds. What is nice is you dont get beat up after a days shooting. My Rem40x left hand prone gun has shot a .204" 5 shot group at 100yds. in a bench rest match with this load.

Go SAVAGE !. I have a few Savage's some old and a few new . I also have a Tikka although not in .223 .

For no other reason Savage is still an American Company that produces dam good products .

I fear the day when the USA will no longer manufacture firearms and we become dependent on those Foreign devils for such things !.

That will indeed be a SAD day !.

Chinese junk abounds in every store along with several other countries crap !.

The new motto : Oh it's cheap enough even if I had to buy it 2 - 3 times !!. Pisses me off to no end !. Buy an American made and keep a Neighbor employed !.

Yea kind of like the Oil Company's HUH !.
That's another story all together ... salute

I own an AR and find it relativly accurate for open sights at those ranges. I hit paper at 500 yards with open sights. I have a scope for it as well however I like shooting it open sights more so I havent even tried to sight it in.

I've got a Tikka Varmiter in .223, it loves 60 gr V-Max's and it's a tack driver! For the money it's the best "out-of-the-box" varmiter.

Shovel ready.....
but hangin' on

i have a savage model 12 in 223,26 inch factory stainless fluted heavy barrel, and accu trigger. with my handloads it shots really well( .45 of an inch) i also own a tika and i like both of them equally as well.tikas do shoot very well.
even tho i personally agree with dr k, buy what you want. savage and rugers are my personal first choices.
if you can afford to build a custom rifel, i would recomend that. good luck and enjoy

Savage has a lot of records in F Class. The Accu-Trigger is the deal maker for me. In 308 they own the CBA (Cast Bullet Assn) production class records; mostly 308's.
