My astronaut pal had breakfast once with Armstrong. Armstrong told him that he had stopped giving autographs because he didn't want people to sell them. One guy offered Armstrong a million bucks to sign 500 postcards. When Armstrong declined, the guy offered him a million for 250. Armstrong declined that offer as well.

Not many people would have declined that offer.

Interesting stuff.

The writer Shelby Foote very rarely signed autographs because he felt each time he signed a book it cheapened the act and made each autograph less meaningful. I respect that.

And consequently have no signed Shelby Foote books...

My astronaut buddy sent me this email today:

The astro office just had a wee chat with Mike Collins; he still has a good sense of humor. When asked about how the splashdown was, he said he lost a case of beer in a bet with Neil…….(I’ll tell you the rest of the story when we can sit down and have a beer together).

Think one of the astronauts posted what he got paid for the moon mission. Government cheapskated to the end. Wink

I heard a quote by someone in the programme that NASA only paid 70% of the total cost, the rest was in free overtime!

Then again, those involved weren't doing it for the money. They were part of an effort larger than themselves ... and the adventure!!

That is true; my buddy is the smartest guy I know (last time I was at his house he was reading a college textbook on PChem or biology or something). He is TOTALLY not motivated by money. He loves flying into space, loves being on ISS, loves everything about it.
