Today, we have all manner of digital and computer wizardry to get us from one place to another. What did they have in the '50s and '60s-- even into the early 70s?

Maps, ADFs, VORs and "wing levelers"

ALLEN W. JOHNSON - DRSS

Into my heart on air that kills
From yon far country blows:
What are those blue remembered hills,
What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content,
I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went
And cannot come again.

Can't speak about flying, but can speak about sailing and the old saying is "if you have a chart, compass, and quality timepiece, you can't get lossed..." With fog, seas, and wind, have been very confused.

More sophisticated aircraft in the 70's had coupled systems. They also had pilots who could add and subtract three figure columns and multiply double digit numbers in their heads at night in bad weather.
