In 1964 Winchester decided to update the Model 70 for cost cutting and manufacturing ease. Beside making it pushfeed, they also changed the stock to impressed checkering and eliminate all hand fitting.

Which is the impetus behind the phrase "Pre-64 Winchester Model 70".

Thanks Frank. Would it be difficult to either change the extractor or if need be by a CRF bolt.

I am by no means an expert on Model 70s or a gunsmith but changing the extractor to just replace it would mean just dismantling the bolt head. The present extractor would work with any cartridge with the same case head diameter (0.532").

Changing the extractor to change to a non-magnum case would require a new bolt since the front of the present bolt has a milled recessed into bolt to fit the 0.532" case head.

The CRF bolt wouldn't work in a pushfeed action. There may be someone in the world who could make it fit but it would probably cost more than buying a new CRF rifle.

I see a company called LongRifles Inc aka LRI in Sturgis, SD that will install an AR stye extractor on a push feed model 70 for about $250

Never used them and I'm not affiliated with them, but was exploring an upgrade for my 1989 Super Express M70 in .375HH and found them on line.

Guys,

This is a great rifle and the non CRF is mostly an issue in one's head. If you don't short stroke the bolt there is no issue.

This is a beautiful and very functional rifle at a great price. I would be proud to own it myself.
