I have posted this many times before; my take on the 270. A round that should have never been developed; there was ZERO use for such a thing. There were very good 7mms from Europe, which would have made a far better caliber for any purpose. However, after WW1, all things German and metric were frowned upon so no American shooter would buy one even if they were made here.
If it was made a 280, it would now be the most popular cartridge in the world. It is bought and used by guys who are afraid of the 30-06, but think that the 270 will kick less and be better for smaller game. All complete nonsense. And Jack OConner promoted it for some unknown reason.
I know, guys kill stuff with it; that is not the point. Please no more hate mail; I get too much now.
So, someone made it a 270..
I have owned, and still own, at least 30 270s. But never fired one. I bust them down for the actions and make pry bars out of the barrels. I even used ten of them as concrete rebars. Not kidding.
So, no, I have no use for the 270, and if American shooters and hunters had had a 7x64 in 1920, it would never have existed.

Excellent post, I can't imagine why you would have gotten hate mail.
I always looked at it as 1925 when it was developed that the U.S .decided to catch up with the rest of the world balisticly. It looks good on paper.

Far as I'm concerned, the .270 Winchester is the perfect cartridge for hunting in the Western US.

SD; that is not my point at all; we know that guys make it work; my point is that we didn't need it in the first place.

I wholly agree with SDH...
To DCPD's point, I suspect had Winchester came out with the .280, (loaded to its true potential) and then promoted by O'Conner the same way he did the .270 we would not have the .270 Winchester.

Probably right about the. 280 it's an excellent cartridge and better than the. 270 it was marketed to late and it had 3 different names that caused confusion for the consumer. But absolutely if they would have stuffed a .284 bullet in the '06 case in 1925 the 270 never would have been a thought as it was an odd ball caliber to begin with.

Two points to be made:
Jack O’Conner probably got paid to promote it,
& the wheel will be re-invented millions of times before we are done.
