However “long term borrowing from family” is more than justifiable!

Yes it is fine; it is not stealing if the seller is stupid. It is called a purchase wherein the buyer paid the seller's price.
Justified in that, taken to a dealer's shop, he would get 50% of retail for it on a good day. So, in reality, it is overpriced at 500.

Dealing in anything.

Comes down to price.

Stealing is never OK. Threatening to castrate your son-in-law sounds reasonable.

Depends on what kind of relationship you want to have with your SIL (and possibly daughter) when he finds out he got hosed. Even thought you paid asking price.
