Hi curious about your thoughts about a .308 for bear in Europe. What bullet is your choice, weight? (I know bigger is better, do have a .375 H&H also.) | ||

I have killed a black bear with a Blaser K 95 Stutzen in 308. I used a Federal factory load with a 180 Woodleigh Soft. I do not think they load that bullet now but I would not hesitate to us the 165 Trophy Bonded bullet, a 150 to 180 X bullet, or a 165 or 180 Nosler Partition, in the 308. Absolutely All 03 guides I have had hunting brown bears uses 308 or 7.62 x 39 and nothing else 02 of them uses military surplus metal jacket YES NO MISTAKE because that's all he can afford or have access to .. Every time I turn up with something different they say I am a foreign coward ! Bottom line is how confident are you as a rifleman and can you place it where you want it the first time ? | |||

Here in Slovenia minimum requirements for bear are 7mm, 11g bullet and 3000J at 100m. I don't know where and how you will be hunting? Big bear is a formidable animal and I have seen big guys snaped, shaking the whole stand when beast appears 30m from you - not able to make a shot...308W is marginal and with all the excitment + night + odd angles = margins are moving even further - the wrong way  . Sure with small bears the size of German Shepherd dog no prob, however anything above 150kg (they can regulary grow over 300kg) I'd use .30-06 or bigger - 9,3 of anykind, .375 H&H etc were made just for the job - IMO. P.S. As guys suggested, stout bullet like Barnes TSX or A-frame would be my pick. | |||

As we are at it - many guys that come to shoot one never study the anatomy. Bear is quite misleading target. Look at the bear skeleton and you can see why 80% of shots gone bad are in the upper front leg and many are low somehow.  | |||

I have shot five black bears with a .308. Used to use simple cup and core bullets, but now use premium bullets such as Nosler. I hit a black bear once in the front of the chest; killed the bear, but took me about 4 hours the next day to find it. I heard the death moan so I was quite confident he was dead, but he sure ran far. All others died on the spot. | |||

I shot one good size blk in canada with 165 gr corlok died really fast. A buddy of mine uses a model 7 in 308 says its all one needs he has shot lots of bears. the biggest a 416 lb dressed. I built a 416 taylor for the big bears that would be my choice for bears over 500lbs. A 308 well kill lots of bears. If it was what a had I would hunt with it. If I had a choiuce for big bears it would be something 338 or bigger. | |||

Thanks for your answers. I think for about 500 pounds or 250 kg .308 is enough gun. This is my daughters favorite round so she will be happy, I use almost always a 375HH when hunting. I have for years asked her (=me) to buy a bigger gun also, but she likes this 308 very much. | |||

It's fine for black bear. For a big brown bear I would take a bigger caliber but the 308 will work when you hit him right. | |||

Very good post. I had last in last year 3 wounded bears because of inexperienced hunters or hunters who are shaking too much when a bear comes. 308 in experienced hands can be a good choice however I wouldn't recommend it. If you go for a beast 250+kg full of muscles 308 is not good choice. Slow and heavy bullet like 9.3mm is a great choice. | |||

Artemis is right. 9.3 mm is a great choise for brown bears, especially if you hunt them in drive hunt. | |||
