Have a champions hunt coming up this fall in Austria. Local mountains only go up to 4k feet. Will be putting the miles and elevation in as best possible. Any suggestions for training?

Stair climbing, stair sprints, or just running stairs are perfect.

find a tall building and take the elevator down, it's on the way down when you're tired that you get the injuries

I would interject with a small warning. I use to do the stair running, and it definitely helps, but beware...a mistake and the resulting crash and burn can be the end of your mountain hunting. Two friends of mine have had a misstep and took a tumble that trashed a knee and they then needed surgery. Ended their mountain hunting.

Stick to climbing stairs at a walk and do like medved said, get out on the grassy slopes and hike. Also, if you don't already, get in the habit of using a walking stick...they will help you avoid a lot of falls, which is extremely important when carrying a heavy pack.
