capt david, I have no idea whether this is a trend or whether it was because Fleet Farm and some of the stores here sold large numbers of nice military Mausers at very low prices - $ 100 or so - but at the Twin Cities Rod and Gun Club, nearly every member has at least one Mauser 8mm rifle, stock military or sporterised and many have several. I have one that I bought from a member here and I just love it. Perhaps the Europeans have shipped most of their old rifles to the USA and been left with very few. Good hunting!

Quote: And if you are not lucky enough to have that nice cartridge in a French MAS, you can shoot in a Mannlicher Schoenauer. Here is a pic of mine from 1950. The 8x60S "Magnum" is a good compromise between the 8x57IS and the 8x64S Brenneke. But I dont care so much about cartridges - I just want them to deliver a heavy enough bullet fastly enough accurately to the target. Fritz

Quote: Mehul Kamdar, Im going to photograph that rifle soon, since I have recently reblued it and also made some refreshment of the stock. As there seems to be some interest in Mannlichers here, I'll try to post the pictures or link to them. Best regards, Fritz K.

Fritz Kraut, A friend on these forums from your country whom I cause to have sleepless nights with pictures of Mausers sent me to this thread to give me a hard time as he knows how I drool over Mannlichers. Beautiful rifle! You are a lucky man. Good hunting!

Is it known as Schler? Was it vampirized by 375HH, or even by 9.3x64 beforehand? Sorry Carcano91, even doing my best, little chance to find any barrel, if it ever existed. Hi mho, I am waiting news from you.

Yes, this is the royal mess about 8x57I(R) vs. 8x57I(R)S. Presumably at some time, the Germans decided to move from a .318" to a .323" bore, and STILL keep the 8mm designation - calling the .323" bore "S". I have always found that a somewhat incomprehensible decision. At least one could have changed the caliber designation (other than the misery "S"). But there it is... The black primers indicate a .323" bore, so don't use this ammo in a .318" bore rifle... What a totally maniac decision on the Germans' part at the time... (shaking my head in disbelief...) - mike Germans are not always logical and well-organized. But the mess was sorted out about 1942. It's quite simple with rifles in 8x57(R), 8x60(R), 8x64/8x65R, 8x75(R) built after that date. They should have an S in the caliber designation stamped on the barrel, and have a .323 bore. It's also simple with any rifles for 8x58R, 8x57R/360, 8x72R etc. These always had .318 bore. With rifles in 8x57(R), 8x60(R), 8x64/8x65R, 8x75(R) built before WWII, one has to be careful. Quote: Sako Mausers 8x60 from the fifties were still made for the old .318" bore. I have had one. Fritz

Quote: Not strong enough for a 10,75x86, but indeed for the 10,75x68. Yes, it was a factory offering. Edmond could tell you more about these rifles - he is still searching for one, as well :-). Carcano

I am on the trail of one now. Maybe together with its smaller sister, the 7x54 MAS - then the civilian MAS family would finally be complete ! I have sold it in summer 2004. It was a beautiful well handcafted gun and well shooting, but quite unpractical. I must confess that I really hated to handle it because of its lack of ergonomy. Preferably I hunt with a M98 or my Winchester 88. Regards, Fritz The true and only Fritz Kraut

Good to see that you are still around here, dear Fritz. I wonder what exactly had irked you about the ergonomics of the 8x60 Mannlicher? The bolt handle, the slim stock, or what?
