Stu,

The hunting period starts eight days before full moon and ends one day after the full moon (10 days in total).

Stu,

this is I feel an astronomical science by itself. The moon phases do unfortunately not go with the same cycle as the height over the horizon. There is a difference in time of several days which causes sometimes the full moon to be very high in the sky providing excellent light for many days. Sometimes like this month, it stays very low and light is barely sufficient for a good shot in the open fields.

I remember nights when a half moon even over a clouded sky wa smore than sufficient, providing a longer phase of many night which could be hunted.

There are some pretty good calenders available on the net which even indicate the amount of light to be expected. It does help to plann your nighly pig hunting, especially when the farmers scream murder because of the damages in wheat, barley and corn fields...

DUK,

You are right, but unfortunately our law is very strict and doesn’t allow any hunting outside that 10 days period.

Oh, I was not aware that this is regulated.

Of course, law always wins over physics...

Here in Germany, night hunting is allowed for predators (foxes) and wild pigs. It is, at the same time a fellony to shoot a leading sow. This, together with the also legal obligation to search for any wounded game makes that "usually" hunters take care at what they shoot. As stated, conditions vary a lot between woods or stubble on open fields, snow in winter and, also pretty convenient, low clouds and stray light reflected from a nearby city.

In general terms, everything here is overly regulated and restricted. I am for this reason quite happy that at least in hunting we still have some issues that depend on our personal responsability and not on law.

Out of that full moon phase, what are your legal shooting hours?

DUK,

To give you an overall picture regarding hunting hours, during the hunting season, I would summarize like this:

-Native game: from sunrise until sunset.
-Migrant game: from sunrise until 4 p.m.
-Wild boar during full moon period: from moonrise until moonset

I know some professional hunters who work for the Forrestry Commission.

They claim that in certain areas in the South populations have reached such levels that the farmers are complaining about crop damage.

Should there be British hunters who are interested in shooting wild boar in Germany and who can offer sika or fallowdeer on a swap basis, please respond!

Would those who may be interested in getting a group together for a driven boar trip drop me a pm, and I can then get a rough indication of numbers, prior to speaking to outfitters at the Gamefair.

Thanks

I hate to tell you guys but the best 4 days I have had in Western NSW in Australia (two shooters) was 96.Of coarse it was not cheap-when you think how much beer was needed to celebrate!(It was summer and 100-110 deg F in the shade)

Australia
I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of drought and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror
The wide brown land for me!

Wombat

That reminds me of a trip to RSA with 75 warthog to 5 of us in 5 days. Walked up pig in the sun - nothing like it.
